Spiderman Pumpkin Stencil Printable – In this case, I chose an interesting picture of Spiderman. It is important to choose images with enough contrast to allow for good interactions/shadows. For Spiderman, the webbing presents a challenge but makes for a great visual experience.
When the pattern is drawn, you have to choose what will stay and how to go. To get detailed information like this you need to use a different engraving depth. I usually use 4 depths:

You can choose to be my legend in the uploaded image. The only flaw is in the final model… the webbing is gray and his suit is white… it should be the other way around but for ease of drawing the model, I changed it.

Next is the pattern tape for the pumpkin. The important thing here is that you have to start from one area (usually the top for me) and tape it there. Then you need to mold the paper around the pumpkin so that the main shape is not distorted. To do this I make a few cuts and folds in small portions of the pattern paper as I smooth out the main image on the surface.
You can see the large cut on the right side of the model. The more cuts and folds are made into smaller parts of the model, the simpler the main image will be.
When the pattern is on and smooth you have to change it. I do this by using a combination of poking holes at the edges of the hard lines of the pattern as well as tracing the lines with just a firm press. I usually use an unleaded pencil to outline and trace the pattern. This will create a very shallow incision in the scalp. This can be seen when the model is removed and traced. I used a Sharpie to trace the indentation.
If you look closely you can see the shallow part of the webbing in the first picture.

Now that the pattern has been transferred, the carving can begin. The best place to start is with webbing. I did the webbing with a combination of a Dremel and an X-Acto knife. With the Dremel I just used a blunt grinding tool and ground about a centimeter or so into the pumpkin flesh.
With a razor blade, I cut about a centimeter into the flesh and then scooped out the contents as I went.
After you carve out the webbing in an area, then use an X-Acto knife with a flattened blade to peel the skin from the center of the webbing. This will give enough light from the interweb site to see the difference.
The eyes are simply cut out with a serrated pumpkin carving blade. All thick eyes should be removed.

The rest of the webbing and legs are done as previously described until the model is essentially complete.
Key points are added (head glow, around the edge of the left knee, left foot, etc.) Again use a serrated knife to cut the full thickness of the pumpkin in those areas. This will allow more light to shine through due to greater depth.
The webbing background can be sketched on the pumpkin with a Sharpie. In this case I created a simple web design echoing one of his suits.
Then use a dremel on low-medium speed to go through the skin of the pumpkin. This will again let some light in and create enough of a background effect.
Spiderman Pumpkin Carvings
A simple candle isn’t bright enough to give a light effect for a pumpkin like this. Cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin to insert the light bulb.
To keep pumpkins from heating up to destruction, I prefer to use a simple table lamp with a fluorescent lamp with a warmer (more orange), rather than cooler (blue) spectrum.
Obviously a wasteful step, but this bulb always looks best in a dimly lit room! Enjoy!
