Doodles, also known as simple drawings, are composed randomly, often created as abstract shapes. Meanwhile, the zentangle pattern comes from the other side. Drawing a zentangle pattern has its own composition, style, pattern, and shape, and is more complex than painting itself. Zentangle is more than just painting. The zentangle method is a proprietary process based on theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. Basically, creating a zentangle involves drawing a “bunch” of lines and then filling those lines with a repeating pattern or design. Every zentangle is unique…because you make a bunch of lines and choose patterns to fill the gaps.

You can use any piece of paper or any pencil, however, for a true zentangle you will need to use some readily available materials. Fine black pens – Sharpie or Sakura Micron pens with extra fine tips are good choices. Since you are using a fine tip marker, your paper should be smooth and work well with the marker. I use white cardstock for zentangles. For the zentangle, the paper you use should be square – 4″ square…that’s the ideal size. However, you can make completely different square sizes for your designs. You can actually buy pieces of zentangle paper called “tiles” in different square sizes.

Once you have your supplies ready and the intricate lines drawn, it’s time to fill the zentangle pattern. I am sharing some simple zentangle patterns to spark your creativity. Gives you some inspiration to hopefully extend and create your own patterns. As I said before, there are countless designs and pattern options, it all depends on how you choose to fill in the blanks.

Since the patent debate surfaced, the art of Zentangle has both advantages and disadvantages. There is a company that has a trademark on the teaching tool, method, and many aspects of zentangle, but they do not have a trademark on the pattern, because there is not enough difference between any doodle art, zentangle, and abstract pattern to warrant a patent.

If we look at it from an artistic point of view, graffiti and Zentangle are very different. But others think that Zentangle is similar to painting because the method is almost the same. But there are huge differences between them.

First, painters use their free minds to create art. Painting is mostly done out of boredom and insouciance. There’s no need to focus on making the pattern, although you may find some repeating patterns on them.

Next, the person doing the tangle aims to focus on making the pattern for consistency. That’s why Zentangle art has fixed format protection.
