There’s no right or wrong way to cut a pumpkin, but it’s a good idea to cut the bottom to preserve your pumpkin after carving. If I’m carving a pumpkin for decoration, I find it’s best to cut off the bottom of the pumpkin with a pumpkin saw, but if you want to use the pumpkin as a candy bucket, then cut off the top to make it. ‘Cover’.
The main thing that will cause your pumpkin to shrivel is lack of moisture. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin and remove the stem, you actually cause the rotting process and the rot starts at the top and creeps down, ruining your pumpkin.
If you cut from the bottom of the pumpkin and leave the stem intact, the rotting process will be much slower and your pumpkin will last longer. Cut pumpkin usually lasts three to five days, unless you live in a cold climate. There are other tips you can follow to preserve your pumpkin after carving – scroll down!

Pumpkin guts are everywhere, so it’s a great idea to lay down newspaper, cling film or baking parchment and use that as a carving surface. After you peel your pumpkin, you can easily scoop out the surface and compost it, compost it, or use it in a recipe.
If you cut a hole in your pumpkin from the top, you can easily remove the lid using the stem, but how do you remove the bottom?
If you’re accessing the bottom, the easiest thing to do is cut a hole a little bigger than your fist, but small enough that you won’t see the pumpkin once it’s seated. After cutting the circle, cut a small triangle on the circumference of the circle. This allows you to use your fingers or a tool to slide into the notch and gently pry the underside of the pumpkin.
Instead of scooping out the insides of the pumpkin one at a time, use a large metal spoon to turn the insides of the pumpkin, loosening it. Scrape the inside of the pumpkin and scoop it out so that most of the inside comes out in one go.
