Toothpicks are a great way to correct mistakes. If you accidentally cut off part of the pumpkin, don’t worry, you can always reattach it using a toothpick to reattach the pumpkin piece.
Petroleum jelly is a must for carved pumpkin. Use jelly to coat the hollow parts of your pumpkin and keep it fresh longer.
If you’re new to carving or don’t want the stress of carving a huge pumpkin, it’s best to find an easy-to-carve pumpkin. We recommend using fall gold pumpkins because they are one of the easiest pumpkin varieties to carve and are still a medium weight and substantial pumpkin. If you want a large pumpkin (but don’t need easy carving), Gold Rush pumpkins are worth a look.
When choosing a pumpkin to carve, check your pumpkin for rotten parts or discolored parts. It’s best to find a pumpkin without any blemishes if you can!

There’s no right or wrong way to cut a pumpkin, but it’s a good idea to cut the bottom to preserve your pumpkin after carving. If I’m carving a pumpkin for decoration, I find it’s best to cut off the bottom of the pumpkin with a pumpkin saw, but if you want to use the pumpkin as a candy bucket, then cut off the top to make it. ‘Cover’.
The main thing that will cause your pumpkin to shrivel is lack of moisture. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin and remove the stem, you actually cause the rotting process and the rot starts at the top and creeps down, ruining your pumpkin.
If you cut from the bottom of the pumpkin and leave the stem intact, the rotting process will be much slower and your pumpkin will last longer. Pumpkin guts are everywhere, so it’s a great idea to lay down newspaper, cling film or baking parchment and use that as a carving surface. After you peel your pumpkin, you can easily scoop out the surface and compost it, compost it, or use it in a recipe.
If you cut a hole in your pumpkin from the top, you can easily remove the lid using the stem, but how do you remove the bottom?
