How To Paper Mache Balloon – I remember as a child making paper mache with newspaper and flour and water. This papier mâché hot air balloon craft uses the same principles, but we used tissue paper and sprinkled glue instead. I prefer this method and it’s so much fun for kids and adults alike!

This is our second craft from this box. We made some beautiful peg butterflies, and now this papier mâché hot air balloon, I’m not sure which is my favorite!

How To Make Paper Mache Bowl With Balloon The Easy Way

Traditional papier mâché is strips of newspaper dipped in a mixture of flour and water. We did this slightly using pieces of tissue paper instead of newspaper, and watered down the glue. If you use colored tissue paper, you don’t need to paint it afterwards. The other thing with tissue paper is that the colors tend to bleed into each other so you create a marbled effect. Bostik White Glu is ideal for papier mâché. By adding a small amount of water, you can paint it instead of soaking the pieces, making the process less messy. This also leads to a polished finish to the project.

Learn how to disable cookies in your browser by reading the full policy. OK Cut the newspaper into 1×3-inch strips. Blow up several balloons, varying the size of each one to make a set of bowls.

Paint a layer of ModPodge on the bottom of a balloon. Apply the newspaper strips one at a time, making sure they absorb the glue as you apply. Once you have a base layer, apply another layer of ModPodge, and place a layer of newspaper strips on top. Keep repeating these steps until you have about five to six layers of paper covering all parts of your bowl.

Place the balloons in the empty cups to dry, making sure they are firm (Photo 1). Allow your balloons to dry and dry thoroughly, about 24 hours. When dry, gently press the balloons and pull them away from the bowl (picture 2).

Cut the uneven edges around the top of the bowls (photo 1). Flip the bowl upside down and apply craft paint, applying multiple coats as needed. Leave to dry (photo 2). Flip back and paint the inside of the bowls with liquid gilding (photo 3). Allow to dry and cure for about a day (Photo 4).

*I took out the space a little to make it big enough to fit my hand in.

* Then I sewed a small cross through some small holes in the center at the top, using embroidery thread, and pulled a length to hang the balloon.

* I made two small holes at the bottom, on either side of the opening, and threaded a ribbon through.

* We found a small basket and cut the other end of the ribbon to the handles and tied it.

* We were looking for a small toy to add to the basket to be a willing adventurer, and found some ceiling space to hang it on a nail.

We have started using this hot air balloon for its purpose… Storytelling. To tell a story without books, you have to lose all inhibitions and not worry one bit what anyone thinks! Since your audience is usually knee deep, they’re pretty enthralled with ANY story and won’t notice if it’s not very good or you’re making it up as you go along.

Oral storytelling is powerful because research suggests it encourages us to use a wider and richer range of vocabulary and depth of ideas than we could if we just read from a set of books. More importantly, it means we can make eye contact with our children while we speak and this teaches amazing communication and response skills.

By modeling the story in this way, we help our children become confident storytellers and deepen their imaginations when they write their own stories in the future. Cakie (2yrs 8mths) chipped in with the storyline to offer me ideas and words to enrich the story and make it her own. There’s no reason why an average 3 and a half year old can’t start telling these stories on their own, and that’s an exciting thought!

I’ll post again soon to let you know what we’re doing with these stories we’re telling, but for now we’re imagining a wonderful world of cake and ice cream where Little Ted can eat candy from trees and watch birds with purple and orange spots through his telescope! There are many wonderful images to picture in our minds and describe on our tongues.
