Flat Stanley Sample Letter – In mid-January I was invited by my 8-year-old daughter to participate in the Flat Stanley Literacy Project.
The project is a great example of the power of making connections and establishing communities to promote and share learning. For those who don’t know, Flat Stanley is the main character in the children’s book published by Jeff Brown in 1964 and illustrated by Tommy Ungerer.

Canadian teacher, Dale Hubert, started the Flat Stanley Project in 1995 to encourage letter writing, but also to strengthen understanding of geography, and perhaps other subjects such as mathematics and sociology. Basically, each participating child creates a Flat Stanley (a paper cutout of the character) and sends it to someone else in the mail. The recipient does something interesting with the Flat Stanley (this could be as simple as a trip to the shops or a day at work) and then writes a letter about it, which is returned (along with the Flat Stanley) to the child. . It was a privilege to be a part of it and, in the hope that it will encourage others to participate, I will share my letter with you.
It’s A Flat World Project 2020
To receive your beautifully written letter and meet Flat Stanley. I know he is used to traveling in envelopes when he visits friends, but he said it was a very difficult trip to Stockwell, probably stuck in a post bag with all those thank you letters. People who send after Christmas. (By the way, thanks for me; I’m glad you liked the Secret Code and that our trip to the ballet was wonderful). Flat Stanley was clearly relieved to be out of the envelope, as you can see in this picture of him and me.
Flat Stanley came to my house on January 16th. He and I were excited to go on an adventure together and we decided we wanted to spend a night out on the last evening of the LumiereLondon Festival, taking in the lights and sights.
We took the Victoria Line to Green Park Station and then down Piccadilly, an elegant street lined with smart shops and hotels. It was dark and many enthusiastic people gathered around us. The Lumiere London festival is the first time that artists who use light in their paintings and sculptures are holding an exhibition in central London. Stanley and I looked up and saw a figure of a man shining on top of a building.
Flat Stanley and I looked at them and knew we were in for a wonderful evening.
Buck The Core Rally
Down the street a large crowd of people looked at a wall covered in colorful, changing faces of movie and television stars.
They were in front of the building known as BAFTA, where films and their actors, cameramen and directors are recognized and awarded.
As we walked we heard music and the crowd around us started to grow faster, clearly something interesting for us to see.
Before there were lights and strange creatures that looked like huge fish swimming in the sky. Flat Stanley and I stood and looked at them in amazement.

Then a loud trumpet call forced us to explore down a side road and to our surprise we found the trunk of an elephant in the archway above our heads.
No wonder it trumpeted loudly, it was clearly fixed. We went to the other side of the arch and there was its head
Of course it wasn’t a real elephant, just a 3d image, but it was cleverly filmed and made us smile.
We wandered through the streets of central London and saw many wonderful sights – there was a woman walking down Carnaby Street.

And little men made of lights that followed each other and seemed to fall down the side of a building in Regent’s Street.
The flat looked to Stanley like a large fishnet hanging over the road at Oxford Circus, which kept changing.
Being levelheaded himself, Stanley got quite excited when we found an area of ββflat, friendly faces lit up in a park called Grosvenor Square.
– The Saints seemed glowing as if they were filled with light. It was really amazing. Such amazing colors and I don’t know how they kept the lights from blurring into each other.
Flat Stanley Great Adventure Letter
We passed the Houses of Parliament (you can tell how late it was by the clock).
Flat Stanley and I had a wonderful evening – it was interesting walking together in the dark. Thank you so much for sending her to live with me. I hope your literacy project at school is fun – I look forward to hearing all about it.
During our adventure I tweeted and shared pictures of Stanley as we wandered the streets and parks of Mayfair, Piccadilly and St James. My comments were collected by Artichoke Trust, the charity responsible for producing the event and encouraging both locals and visitors to see London in a new light.
It was so much fun to connect and be able to thank the creative minds that brought such great scenes and artists to so many people. Flat Stanley and the project are famous around the world and people commented about seeing Stanley on Twitter and cheered us on during our walk. You can see some of their comments below this post.
Teaching Letter Writing
It was a strange feeling when it came time to send the letter to Flatt Stanley and Sophie – even though he had only been with me for a few days, I really liked the little guy. Sophie’s mom sent me a photo to confirm that he is safely back at Sophie’s school and participating in the class wall party of all the adventures of the Stanley Flats.
It was fun. I experienced and gained a lot during my involvement in the project – none of us is ever too old to enjoy the joy of learning or sharing things with others. Thank you Sophie for inviting me to write to you and for introducing me to Flat Stanley. All of us involved in some small way helped advance literacy, increase understanding, and promote the benefits of connection – topics that should never be taken for granted.
@ This made me decide to buy a flat Stanley for my girls to study with. An absolute classic.
@ @jeffwren1960 Flat Stanley is a great book. Experiencing # LumiereLDN, it’s a pleasure to see him again

@Carry on – I’m sure Flat Stanley appreciates the outing and the holding too! π
@ Where is your flat Stanley from? Bringing back memories of when he was a little brother. Favorite My nephew Jack had a Flat Stanley learning adventure that turned into a Flat Stanley farming adventure for many of my friends and me too! So many people have spent so much time helping Jack learn more about this wonderful country of ours that I can’t limit it to one book. I really wanted to share it more widely. So slowly I started posting them here on my blog. It took a long time but we’re done!
We started it all with a simple blog post asking if anyone would be willing to help me share a series of adventures for Jack’s class and his flat Stanley. The blog posts below provide that request and some initial ideas of what came together! I love how many farm adventures he had but he also got city time!
The following list of links and introductions has been compiled to help you find some of the adventures that interest you most.
Flat Stanley Project
Jake wanted to thank you all. So he wrote this great letter to all the people who hosted Flat Stanley and sent back stories of the adventures he went on!
When you read that… make sure you watch the end. Here it is all typed and personalized:
Hello everyone, Thank you so much for helping us with the Flat Stanley project. It was very cool and fun. I know Flat Stanley is grateful to all you good people. My teacher, Mrs. Rory, put my Flat Stanley book in the front bin at school, how she loved it!!! Love, Jake Thanks!!!
Jake’s book was pulled as one of the best in the school and they put it in a display case at the front of the school for a while! (She used three exclamation points for this!) She also told me that when everyone in the class could look at other children’s books, she had the most attention of many children. She said many of her classmates didn’t know her family knew about it
