18 Birthday Cake Ideas – One of the first cakes I made for a friend was a Star Cake. It was also one of my first posts, two sentences and one photo. When I decided I wanted a blog, I had no idea what to do or how to do it. I still do! I look back at the many cakes I’ve made and see things I wish I’d done differently, but even though it wasn’t perfect, I’m still very proud of my original star cake. I think this is where I thought I could make a good cake.
My friend Kate asked me to make this for her daughter Madeleine’s 18th birthday. Kate and I spent a lot of time together in the cold and wet: watching our 9-year-old sons play football, hockey or soccer, or Boot Camp. Right now I’m looking forward to Boot Camp without wearing ear warmers and two pairs of gloves and spending time watching the boys play cricket in the sun. And by that I mean talk and compete for tea.

In addition to the family birthday cake, Madeleine was staying with friends before going to celebrate her birthday, so she needed cupcakes. I tried to carry this theme with stars and colors:

The Madeleine cake is a triple layer chocolate sponge and all the cupcakes are chocolate. Accents are pink, silver and white. I found some really nice ribbons for the cake: a shiny silver one that goes around the floor and a shiny mesh ribbon that I layered over the gray ribbon.
I made the top with floral wire and icing stars in gray and two tone pink with glitter icing. I usually soak the floral wire in water as the glue for the sugar paste, but this time I used edible glue and I was surprised how much better it worked. I also made some extra stars for the cupcakes.
Then I added some silver stars and some twisted blocks and the rest of the ribbon at the base of the top.
I wanted the cupcakes to be “custom” but since they were all chocolate with chocolate butter and cake on top it was a little tricky. I used my favorite silver baskets with white, pink and silver embellishments. The cupcake stars are the same as the cake, I also used silver and two shades of pink.

I like the little silver stars: they go last, I think it’s best to stick to the sugar stars. I’m lucky they lasted: next time I’ll definitely sprinkle sugar stars on them while they’re still flat.
