Zacchaeus, who was a publican, is introduced as a short man. His job was to collect money that people owed to the king. However, Zacchaeus received more money from the people than he expected. If someone had to pay the king a coin, Sachaeus asked them to pay two, and he kept one for himself. This is called theft. Zacchaeus was rich and had a lot of money, but no one wanted to be his friend because he stole money from them. He had a dark, sinful heart.

Any time is a good time to tell the story of Zacchaeus to preschoolers (Luke 19:1-10), but especially in the fall, there are many related activities that can be done as part of a unit of study. Below is a list of 12 Montessori-inspired activities you can do with your children to reinforce the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus.

1. Story devices. We used Legos because we had all the pieces we needed (actually a tree and some Legos). When I tell a story, the movement of the statue helps him understand what is happening because he can see the concrete expression. I usually put the Lego diorama on the shelf and watch him retell the story himself from time to time.

2. Climb the tree! There is no better way to buy into a story than to give your child the experience of climbing a tree. (We never allow a child to climb a tree alone, so please use good judgment and safety when doing this activity with your child.)

3. Part of a wooden puzzle. As you and your child try to climb the tree, point out and talk about the parts of the tree: trunk, branches, leaves, and roots. Then ask your child to solve the puzzle while you are at home. Ask him which part of the tree he thinks Zacchaeus is sitting on. (If your kids are young, you may have to point out that Zacchaeus is sitting on a branch.) If you don’t have a puzzle, you can easily make one out of felt.

4. Types of tree birth certificates. Label three very different trees that your child can easily tell apart. One of them should be sycamore and the other two should be easily found in your neighborhood. Tell your child:
