Sewing Some Holiday Hearts

I have a new craft to share with you today, a cute and simple Woven Heart Basket perfect for Valentine’s Day. All you need to get started is some paper (contrasting colors or patterns will work), some scissors and some glue.

Each heart starts with two pieces of folded paper or light cardboard that you join together. They can be a little tricky to get started so make sure you follow the instructions carefully. After some practice, it’s actually quite easy to do.

To make it even easier, I’ve even created a printable template that you can download for free. Print on the back of your favorite scrapbook paper for a beautifully designed basket.

These woven paper hearts are traditionally a Christmas ornament in Denmark and Sweden and hung on the Christmas tree but I think they would also make a lovely Valentine’s Day. They look pretty straight as they hang from a branch and are filled with candy and used as a paper ornament.

I made these hearts with scrapbook paper designed by American Crafts and it worked out great. I like to use scrapbook paper for many crafts. It’s card stock lighter than paper, which means it’s stronger than regular printer paper.

For a traditional Valentine’s Day color scheme, I’ve chosen some of my favorite patterns with lots of pink and red in them, but I think they look equally good across the color spectrum. I mean, how many black and gold hearts will appear?

If you are using patterned paper, print the pattern on the back of your paper and fold it again with the printed lines inwards.

2. With the folded edges facing each other, knit the first strip of paper (red) between the 2 layers of the pink strip.

You have to think of it as weaving from the inside, rather than the traditional technique of weaving up and down. So you’re going to take the red strip and put it inside the pink strip. This is what makes the boot.

4. For the second row, you need to do the same thing you did with the first row, but this time you will reverse the order.

6. Weaving gets a little harder as you go along, so try to be patient. As always, I suggest you practice on some scrap paper first.

The last strip needs some twisting as there is not much room for the paper to move. It helps to push and slide the strips into place as you move forward.

If you are having a hard time keeping the last strip in place, it might help to make the strips a little longer the first time you cut them, an extra millimeter or 2 can make all the difference.

8. To finish, cut a strip of scrap paper (I used the paper left when I cut the pattern) and stick it inside your basket to make a handle.

You can hang them individually, string them to make banners, or use them as gift tags.

I used some leftover paper to make the arms but if you want to make it more interesting here are a few ideas:

Want a stronger basket that you can use again next year? Replace the paper with a piece of felt. First you will need to print the pattern on plain paper and then draw it on your felt, but the rest of the steps will remain the same. Attach your arm using some fabric glue and you’re done.

You can find them in my big Valentine Coloring Page Pack. The whole pack is just £7 and includes 10 heart coloring pages, 10 Valentine’s Day coloring pages, 10 Valentine’s Day cards, 12 Valentine’s Day banners, 6 labels of gifts and 4 bookmarks!

Super Cool Paper Weaving Crafts For Kids

The paper heart basket is a traditional Scandinavian paper craft that is usually used to hang treats on the Christmas tree – but the baskets are also perfect for Valentine’s Day. Unlike most of my work, this is not an original design and you can easily find other instructions on the web, including the felt version here and millions of videos on YouTube. However, I offer an easy pattern with variations that you can play with and combine to create 6 different patterns.

Click here to download the patterns from my website — the pattern is FREE, but you’ll need to enter a valid email address because I’ll send you a link to the files.

Don’t worry, I will not use your information for any other purpose (IF YOU WANT to receive my newsletters). I want to understand how many people are interested in my projects. While you’re there, feel free to poke around, I have tons of pop-up cards and paper toy patterns, and most of them are free.

There are three different templates on the PDF file. You will have to print twice on contrasting colored paper (red and white are traditional). In these photos I made three hearts by matching the matching patterns for each basket, but you can also create asymmetric patterns by connecting mismatched patterns.

I used plain old regular copy paper for these examples and it worked well. As long as you fill the basket with some sweets (as opposed to river stones), then it will be strong enough. But of course you can use fancy, glittery paper, leftover wrapping paper, thick cardboard, felt, leather, ribbon tape or anything else you can think of.

Fold the pattern along the dotted line and then cut out the shapes and lines with a pair of scissors.

After cutting out your pieces, flip the folds over so that any print lines are on the inside of the basket.

Weaving is usually quite simple: you have 2 sets of threads (warp and weft) at right angles. The weft is then woven alternately over and under the warp.

By wrapping on both sides. This sounds complicated and confusing, and taking pictures is difficult, but it is much simpler than it seems once you have the paper in your hand.

To position yourself, place your two folded sheets of paper at a right angle to form a heart shape. Then knit the paper, starting with the top strips closest to the round side.

You don’t need to keep the strips at a perfect 90 degree angle when you start, but as you get closer to the end, you will bring the strips closer and closer to their final position.

Use scrap paper to make a small folded handle and attach it to the inside of your basket at the intersection of your two woven sheets.
