We use our cell phone or use our car to navigate to an address, but how does the phone know its location? But if we are at sea without any roads or road signs, how do oceanographers know where we are in the great blue ocean with no land to see? Global Positioning Systems, also known as GPS, use satellites to locate locations on Earth. Many satellites are used to determine our position using a series of coordinates covered on the Earth’s surface called latitude and longitude.

Latitude is a line starting at the equator or 0 degrees (°) of latitude. East and west latitudes are parallel to the equator and are measured in degrees north or south of the equator at 90 degrees north or south. Latitude lines are far from each other. A degree of latitude is divided into 60 minutes (‘). A minute of latitude is 1.15 miles or 1 nautical mile. A minute of latitude is divided into 60 seconds (”). We indicate latitude in degrees, minutes and seconds with north (+) or south (-). For example: 27 degrees 12 minutes 28 inches north. Unlike the equator, which is the center of the Earth, the prime meridian, or 0° longitude, is fixed to use Greenwich, England. This city has moved many times in history to tour other big cities. Lines of longitude run north and south from pole to pole, meaning they are not the same at different latitudes, they are farther apart at the equator than at the poles. It takes 24 hours to complete one revolution or 360 degrees. So every hour the Earth rotates by 15 degrees of longitude (360 degrees / 24 hours = 15 degrees per hour). Longitude is measured east or west of the prime meridian at 180 degrees from the anti-meridian or international date line. Longitude is written in degrees, minutes and seconds and east (+) or west (-) of the prime meridian. For example: 85 degrees 15 minutes 32 inches west.

Graphing Latitudes And Longitudes Using Python
With the latest digital technology, latitude and longitude can also be displayed in decimal form. If you’re plotting locations on a map with software, you’ll need to convert them using one of the online latitude and longitude converters. Just remember that in decimal you will use positive (+) for east and north and negative (-) for west or south. For our purposes, we use historical degrees, minute and second settings. When you write a location, you must include both latitude and longitude, starting with the first latitude. For example: 27 degrees 12 minutes 28 inches north, 85 degrees 15 minutes 32 inches west. Remember you will get lost without basic directions (North, South, East, West)!
When looking at maps, it is important not only to note coastlines, sea basins, and ocean features, but also to note the longitude and latitude measurements for that particular map. Similar to specifying the scale on the x- or y-axis for a chart, scale points or points between two degree numbers can be degrees, minutes, seconds, or a combination based on the approach to a location on the map.
