The lines of latitude and longitude (top) help us determine our location on Earth. Every place on Earth has a specific address, called an absolute location. Imaginary lines, called lines of latitude, run from west to east parallel to the equator. These lines measure the distance in degrees north or south of the equator (0° latitude) to the North Pole (90° north latitude) or to the South Pole (90° south latitude). One degree of latitude is about 70 miles (113 km). Longitudes run from north to south and meet at the poles. These lines measure the distance in degrees east or west from 0° longitude (zero meridian) to 180° longitude. Prime meridian passes through Greenwich, England.

Scale on a map can be shown as a fraction, words, line, or bar. It links the distance on the map with the distance in the real world. Sometimes the scale determines the type of map projection. Maps may include an arrow or compass rose pointing north on the map. If you look at a world map or a globe, you can see lines running from east to west and from north to south.

The lines running from east to west are called lines of latitude. The lines running from north to south are known as lines of longitude.

While lines of latitude run from east to west across the map, latitude indicates the position of a point on the ground in a north-south direction.

Latitudes start at 0 degrees at the equator and end at 90 degrees at the north and south poles (up to 180 degrees latitude in total). Therefore, the higher the latitude value, the closer it is to the North or South Pole.

Everything north of the equator is known as the Northern Hemisphere and everything south of the equator is known as the Southern Hemisphere.

The latitudes are called parallels and together span 180 degrees of latitude. The distance between each degree of latitude is about 69 miles (110 kilometers).

For example, the 49th parallel is marked by part of the border between Canada and the United States that was agreed between the United States and Great Britain as part of the 1818 treaty:

The five main parallels of latitude from north to south are called the Arctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle.

The equator divides the Earth into the northern hemisphere, and the southern hemisphere marks the position of 0 degrees latitude. Latitude is the angular distance north or south of the equator.

The equator marks the places on Earth that are equidistant from the north and south poles. The equator is the only line of latitude that is a great circle, all other latitudes are small circles.

Here’s an interesting fact: the original definition of the meter in 1793 was: one ten-millionth (10⁻⁷) of the distance between the equator and the North Pole in a great circle.

The Tropic of Cancer marks the place where the sun reaches its zenith at this latitude. The exact latitude is not a fixed point and the latest measurement for 2014 is 23° 26′ 14.675″ (23°26′16″).

The summer solstice, which occurs on June 20 or 21 each year, marks the day when the sun shines vertically above this parallel.

Each year the parallel latitude of the Tropic of Capricorn moves, currently located at 23°26′ 14.440″.

The winter solstice, which occurs on December 21 or 22 each year, marks the day when the sun shines vertically over this line.

Horse latitudes are located about 30 degrees north and south of the equator. Equine latitudes are areas in the subtropics where the prevailing winds diverge and flow either poleward (known as westerly winds) or equatorward (known as trade winds).

Longitude is a north-south line indicating the east-west position of a point. Therefore, latitude is the angular distance east or west of the prime meridian.

The lines of longitude run from pole to pole and cross the equator at right angles. All lines of longitude are the same length. Each line of longitude is also half a great circle.

Longitude is 360 degrees (+180° east and −180° west). The line of longitude 0 degrees is known as the prime meridian and divides the world into the eastern and western hemispheres.

Distances west of the prime meridian are indicated by a – in front of the number (negative numbers), while distances east of the prime meridian are indicated by positive numbers (-180 degrees west longitude and 180 degrees east longitude).

The distance between longitudes decreases with distance from the equator. As you move poleward, the distance between each line of longitude gets smaller until they converge at the north and south poles.

The distance between longitudes at the equator is equal to latitude, about 69 miles. At 45 degrees north or south latitude, they are about 49 miles (79 km) apart.

The distance between longitudes reaches zero at the poles when the meridian lines converge at that point.

The longitude where the degree is zero is known as the prime meridian. It passes through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, also known as the Greenwich Meridian, and divides the Earth into two equal halves, known as the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere.

The line on Earth where one calendar day passes into another is known as the International Date Line (IDL), which runs across the Pacific Ocean.

The line is usually located at an angle of 180 degrees from the prime meridian, but the line bypasses some regions and islands so as not to divide neighboring parts of regions and countries into two separate days.

There are 23 one-hour and two 30-minute sections dividing the world into different time zones. Traveling from east to west across the International Date Line moves the calendar forward by one day.

A pair of numbers, known as coordinates, is used to indicate a geographic location using latitude and longitude.

To locate the United States Capitol building using latitude and longitude, you need: 38° 53′ 35″ North, 77° 00′ 32″ West.

Decimal degrees, which convert minutes and seconds of coordinates, is another way of writing coordinates. Instead of writing cardinal directions (N, S, Z, or Z) in decimal degrees, points west of the prime meridian and south of the equator are preceded by a negative sign.
