Michigan’s major interstate highways connect its major cities and facilitate travel between Michigan and its neighbors. I-69 curves in southeastern Michigan, between the Ontario and Indiana borders. I-75 travels through eastern Michigan from north to south, while I-94 travels through southern Michigan from east to west. I-96 connects Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids.
Michigan’s other interstate highways serve the state’s metropolitan areas. I-194 connects Battle Creek to I-94. I-196 connects I-96 in Grand Rapids with I-94 near Benton Harbor. I-275 connects I-75 to Detroit’s western suburbs. I-375 is a short feeder highway with easy access to downtown Detroit. I-475 provides easy access to downtown Flint from I-75 and I-69. I-496 connects downtown Lansing with I-96. I-675 connects downtown Saginaw with I-75. I-696 serves the northern suburbs of Detroit.
Michigan’s Lower and Upper Peninsulas are connected by the towering Mackinac Bridge. One way to enjoy some of what the state has to offer is to take a 200-mile road trip along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan from Ludington Fishing Harbor to Mackinaw City. Travelers can enjoy sweeping coastal views from Point Betsie Lighthouse and the 71,000-acre nature preserve on the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Crossing Little Traverse Bay, the winding drive also encounters enclaves known as tunnels of trees, as well as Wilderness State Park, which offers plenty of hunting, fishing, hiking, and water sports. Although it has no official name or boundaries, Western Michigan refers to the coastline and towns along the shores of Lake Michigan, stretching from Benton Harbor in southwestern Michigan to Petoskey in northwestern Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Although called a lake, Lake Michigan is huge, the third largest of the Great Lakes in the United States, and is shared by four states – Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. But some of Lake Michigan’s best features are on its east shore, which is part of Western Michigan!
There’s no denying that Lake Michigan’s beautiful shoreline and beaches are West Michigan’s most popular attractions, but there’s so much more to see and do in West Michigan!
With nearly 300 miles of stunning coastline, beautiful sandy beaches, huge dunes, lighthouses, multiple state parks and campgrounds, West Michigan is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts! Visiting outside of winter and spring, flying into Detroit or one of the regional airports, renting a car and staying in a beach town is the best way to explore Western Michigan!
Best Time to Visit West Michigan: While West Michigan is accessible year-round, winter and spring aren’t the best times to visit West Michigan for sightseeing, beaches, and outdoor activities due to Michigan’s long and brutal winters. The warm summer weather is the best time to explore Western Michigan, and fall, especially from mid-September to mid-October, is the best time to see the spectacular fall colors in Western Michigan.
How long does it take to get to Western Michigan: With multiple beaches, state parks, dunes, quaint beach towns, gardens, and museums, I recommend spending at least 5 days exploring the main highlights of Western Michigan. However, if you are pressed for time, you can make multiple trips and see several places on each trip, but make sure you see them all, as every attraction in Western Michigan offers an unparalleled experience and has its own charm , and choosing one of them is very challenging!
Getting to Western Michigan: Western Michigan is accessible through several international and regional airports, but exploring Western Michigan requires a lot of driving. Alternatively, you can take the train or bus to Grand Rapids, rent a car, and start your West Michigan road trip.

Parking and Transportation in Western Michigan: Parking is not an issue in Western Michigan as all attractions including beaches, cities and parks offer on-site parking. While some counties and cities offer public transportation in Western Michigan, I highly recommend renting a car when visiting Western Michigan.
West Michigan Accommodation and Dining: While you may not find luxury resorts and boutique hotels near all of West Michigan’s attractions, there are quite a few great hotels and B&Bs close to all of West Michigan’s major attractions. Camping is also a popular activity in West Michigan, and there are several campgrounds along Lake Michigan. While dining options may be limited in some areas, especially in parks or wilderness areas, you’ll find a decent number of eateries and eateries in large cities in Western Michigan.
