It was a well written pattern that I was able to put together relatively easily. I made myself a challenge without reading all the way through the instructions (another job…proud!) but of course that’s my fault. And here I am with no make-up on and a welding hat trying to get a picture of myself posing in front of our big window. Neighbors on their way to work stop for a moment, trying to understand what I’m doing. I’ve been a 35-year-old SAHM since I was two, and I can take a picture of myself in front of my neighbors if I want to, I tell myself. I’m so excited to share a great new free template I found. I guess there’s no time for mascara and waiting for the afternoon sun to rise high enough to take photos in the backyard. It must be done now. So there you go. 😉

Maybe rate a certain story first? If not, scroll down a few paragraphs because I feel confused this morning! To begin with I should tell you that my father is a welder and so are my brothers and a couple of cousins. This is how I first searched the Internet for a sewing pattern.

Unisex Graphic Woven Cap

One of the signs of a good and safe welder’s hat is that it is made of 100% cotton (linen can also work). This makes sense as we all know that synthetic materials like nylon and polyester melt when exposed to heat and flame. Also, as you can imagine, welding is hot work, and a breathable and absorbent material like cotton is best. When wearing a welder’s protective mask, the hair and the back of the head are exposed. The hat part of the welding hat is designed to prevent sparks from burning the hair, while the short, soft beak is turned back to cover and protect the neck. And finally, the adjustable straps with the halo of the welding mask become much more comfortable if they are supplemented with a welder’s hat.

And besides, I think the welding hats are cute! What do you think? Can you imagine how they would look with fabric flowers, yo-yos, buttons and pins to dress them up a bit? Welding caps can really be fashionable. The cap is deep so it covers many square inches of hair. It was too deep for me and my ponytail, so I tucked the back of the hat band in the back. This showed a glimpse of the backside fabric and allowed me to wear my ponytail a little higher. I think it’s a cute look.

Ok, now for the DIY part of this post. I found a free W-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l pattern online. Special thanks to a flickr friend at Seemingly Simple! Well, it is, and that’s another really cool thing, isn’t it?
