United States Map With Capitals – As the name suggests, the United States of America is made up of different countries, 50 states to be exact. There are 48 contiguous states in what is known as the Continental United States. Two other states, Alaska and Hawaii, are effectively separated from the continental United States, the former by the western dependent territories of Canada and the latter by the Pacific Ocean. The United States is a federal republic. The US Constitution delegates certain powers to the federal and state governments. The seat of the United States federal government is in a federal district known as Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia), but each state’s seat of government is in what are known as state capitals.
State capitals exist for the same reason as national capitals. That is, to be the seat of government. Therefore, just as the federal government of the United States maintains the principal organs of its executive, legislative, and judicial powers in Washington, D.C., so each state maintains its executive, legislative, and judicial powers in its capital. While the President of the United States resides in the White House, the chief executives of state governments, commonly called governors, have their own residences in their state capitals. These residences are commonly called governors’ mansions.

Historically, choosing a country’s capital has been a difficult task. Some state capitals were chosen for strategic reasons. For example, in 1777, the capital of Delaware was moved from New Castle to Dover because the latter was centrally located and provided protection from British raiders on the Delaware River during the American Revolutionary War. Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, was also chosen for its central location. In 1824, when Florida was still a US territory, its leaders chose Tallahassee as the capital because it was located halfway between San Augustine and Pensacola, which were the two big cities in Florida at the time.

In many cases, US state capitals were located in different cities before establishing their current capitals. For example, Alabama had five different capitals until Montgomery became the capital in 1846. In California, the designation of the capital took five years, beginning in 1849, when the first state constitutional convention was held at Colton Hill. After only one month, the Legislators moved to Pueblo de San José, where they remained until May 1, 1851. In January 1852, the Legislators moved again, this time to Vallejo. A few days later they moved to Sacramento. They stayed there for a year, then returned to Vallejo, where they stayed for a month before moving to Benicia in February 1853. Finally, the capital was moved back to Sacramento on February 25, 1854, where it has remained ever since.
There are also cases in the history of the United States where the state had two capitals. Delaware, for example, had two joint capitals, Hartford and New Haven, from 1701 until 1875, after which the former became the sole capital. When it was under Spanish rule, Florida also had two capitals, one in San Augustine, and the other in Pensacola, because at that time, the future state of the USA was divided into two separate regions. Even today, Maine’s government is not entirely centered in the state capital, Augusta. The main office of the State Supreme Court is still located in Portland, which was the capital of Maine until 1832.
Historically, the task of choosing a state capital rested with the government of each state, or the government of what might become a US state in the future, as many state capitals were chosen before the states they corresponded to reached. There have been cases, however, where the capital was chosen by popular vote. Pierre was chosen as the capital of South Dakota after a referendum in 1890, defeating its rival, Huron. Denver was the temporary capital of Colorado when it attained statehood in 1876, but in 1881 a referendum was held to decide whether Denver should be the permanent capital, with five other cities competing as well. Denver ultimately won with two-thirds of the vote.
More often than not, the state capital is not the largest city in the state. For example, it would be easy for people to assume that New York City is the capital of New York State because it is the largest city in the state, let alone the largest city in the United States. But this is not the case. The capital of the state of New York is located in the city of Albany, and it has existed since 1797. However, Albany is the sixth largest city in the state. Some state capitals barely qualify as cities. The population of Pierre, South Dakota is 14,000 (estimated), while the population of Augusta, Maine is only 18,500. The smallest state capital is Montpelier, the capital of Vermont, which has a population of just 7,855. However, it is also true that most small state capitals are located in states with smaller populations, compared to other states in the United States. The aforementioned state of Vermont, for example, is the second least populated state in the entire country.

Some US state capitals are large, but only in rare cases are they the largest cities in their states. The capital of the largest state in all of the United States is Phoenix, the capital of Arizona. It has a population of approximately 1.7 million, making it the largest city in Arizona and the fifth largest in the country. Columbus, the capital of Ohio, is also the largest city in its state. The second largest state capital, Austin, Texas, has a population of almost 1 million, although this is far less than Dallas, the largest city in Texas, which has a population of over 1.4 million. Sacramento, the capital of California, the nation’s most populous state, has a population of only 525,000 (estimated), compared to Los Angeles, the largest city in California and the second largest in the United States, with a population of nearly 4. millions It no longer supports old versions of your web browser to ensure user data remains secure. Delivery was a little slow, but it was worth the wait – my son is happy to have this in his room. (And the delivery is strange now, the package seemed a little forgotten, which is definitely not the seller’s fault)
I expected more matte paper. This is photographic and printed paper. It might still work for what you need, but not what I expected.
