Turtle Stuffed Animal Pattern – Make this adorable stuffed sea turtle with my free sewing pattern. This adorable sea turtle sewing pattern was created from my son’s sea turtle Halloween costume and has become a huggable new friend for him.
I always knew she would turn her sea turtle costume into a stuffed animal. For the past two years he still wore the suit around the house until he finally outgrew it. That’s when I knew it was time to make him a plushie to add to his growing collection.
Turtle Stuffed Animal Pattern
So not only did I create a free sewing pattern to use for this stuffed sea turtle, but also for the sea turtle costume (keep scrolling to see how to convert the costume).

A stuffed sea turtle is a great sewing project for beginners or advanced. The stuffed sea turtle pattern works best with a wool fabric and is designed for exposed seams. The pattern can be adapted to other fabrics and you may need additional seam allowance.
Trace the pattern pieces onto the fabric and cut them out. If your polo has a front/back, cut 2 layers at a time with the wrong side facing.
On one piece of each fin, line up and sew the fin scales in place. I have attached a diagram of the pattern pieces to help with placement.
Then, with wrong sides facing, sew 2 flap pieces together leaving the straight edge open. Compress the flap slightly and sew the open end closed. Repeat for the 2 front and 2 back fins. put aside
Tucker The Turtle Crochet Pattern
With wrong sides facing, sew along the long edges of the back pieces leaving the short end open. Push the tail slightly and then sew the short end closed. put aside
On both head parts, place and sew the eye parts and scales in place. Then, with wrong sides facing, sew the head pieces around the perimeter leaving the straight edge open for stuffing. Fill the head with polyfill. Fold the straight edge of the flat head in the opposite direction to the first seam. The neck then sat flat against the bottom of the shell.
On one part of the shell base, cut out and sew the shell scales in place. This is now the top layer.
Pin the tail in place on the belly piece. Sew the short end of the tail twice for extra support. Repeat with the fins and then the head.
Turtle Crochet Pattern
With the wrong sides of the shell facing out, pin and sew around the perimeter of the shell making sure to leave an opening for the stuffing. Fill the shell with polyethylene filler. Sew the opening closed.
Hand sew the top edge of the turtle neck and head to the shell to prevent the head from falling off.

Stuffed Turtle Sewing Pattern
Unlike their real-life counterparts, our turtle is adorable from top to bottom. It’s meant to be a little pillow friend, and as such, its head is designed to droop a bit rather than stick straight out. We decorated Tobi with a bow for some of his photo poses. Our signature fabric is Shannon Fabrics’ Cuddle Velvet in a delicate knit and bold chevron stripe. Of course, you can choose your own green combination or live dangerously and make your turtle any rainbow color you want.
Note that turtle doves have button eyes. They are sewn securely in place (you’ll see below how they are secured with a heavy thread across the head to create a slightly fringed look). But, if you want to make this for a very young child, you might consider using fabric circles with appliqués instead of buttons. Just make sure you choose a fabric that won’t bleed onto the main body wool in the wash.
Measuring approximately 21 inches from nose to tail and 14 inches wide, Toby measures above his shell, but with the exception of his legs. That no longer supports old versions of your web browser to ensure user data remains secure. Update to the latest version.

My granddaughter and I enjoyed making “Zino the turtle” together. She is learning to sew and with my help she was able to do a lot of the sewing. The pattern is simple and the instructions were easy to follow!
This was a very easy pattern to follow as it is well written. I chose to make it out of flannel which sewed up well and made a lovely huggable turtle.
