Tumblr Questionnaire – I’m always happy to help promote my fellow authors, especially those who are just starting out on our author journey… Check out my interview with Nigeria Lockley, whose novel Seasoned With Grace (Urban Books) will be released on the 28th. July! Below is a synopsis of Seasoned With Grace, followed by an interview…
Sentenced to probation, 30-year-old supermodel Grace King must make plans to become an actress to extend the longevity of her career. Grace’s ambitious lawyer, Ethan Summerville, who is desperate to follow Grace and her work, has her full community service in the last place Grace wants to be. his church. Instead of God, Grace finds a “chocolate drop” in a man – Brother Horace Brown. However, Horace isn’t looking for a supermodel. He wants his woman saved and sanctified, but Grace has never met a man who can stand up to her. Will Horace compromise his faith to taste happiness, fame and grace? While Grace focuses on pursuing her passion, Ethan finds a director who is willing to take a risk and cast Grace in his debut film, but the role is too good for Grace. Will this movie revive Grace’s relationship with God and her career, or bring her closer to destruction? 1. What inspired you to write Seasoned With Grace? I can’t say that anything inspired me to write this story. I just saw Grace King in my head during rehearsal and surgery. I just wrote the story as it came to me. 2. Why did you choose a supermodel as the main character of your story? I didn’t make that choice. I don’t force my will on my characters. Maybe it’s skill or just organic, but I take them as they are and let them go. 3. How do you research the supermodel industry? Bottom line, I’m a fashion insider. I read Vogue, InStyle, visited various fashion blogs, and of course you know I watched too many episodes of America’s Next Top Model. So I didn’t have to do much research and bless the Lord for Google. 4. What do you hope readers will learn or understand from reading this story? I hope readers learn that despite life’s adversities, God has not forgotten them, and you can’t go so far that you can’t be redeemed. These are just two of the big lessons in the book, but a subtle lesson I learned while writing Seasoned With Grace is to be thankful for your friends. 5. I read that you wrote most of Seasoned With Grace on your cell phone. It is true? Why? how long did it take Could you explain. I wrote most of Seasoned with Grace on your cell phone. I started this way because the first time I saw a story in my head, I was on the subway and the only thing I had in my head was my cell phone. It was a bit more convenient than hauling my laptop out at rush hour, and when I realized I was spending an hour a day on the train commuting, I decided to take advantage of it. It only took a few months to complete Seasoned with Grace. 6. I understand you have started your own publishing company, Inheritance Books. Why did you decide to start your own publishing company? When will the first book of your new venture debut and what will it be called? (if you have this information) Starting the old cards was one of those moves when the Spirit says transfer decisions. Last year I started working on a short story that I planned to publish independently with my publisher at the time, Urban Christian. I only had a two-book contract and my plan was to test the indie waters before renewing my contract. Now fast forward to the last week of February 2015 – I’ve been selected for jury duty and despite everyone complaining about having to be there, I have the company name, tagline and author development plans in my head. For a while I thought I had delusions of grandeur, but something inside told me to start this publishing house. I applied for an LLC, finalized my logo and started publishing coaching courses. When I showed the logo to my sister to get her opinion, she said, “It’s nice, but what’s it for?” I replied, “To my publishing house. There’s a hole and I want to fill it.” The very next day I learned that the Urban Christian Books line had been discontinued. So it wasn’t a decision; it was more of an anointing. The first release is my short story, Tempted to Touch. I would like to continue with the inspirational anthology and by the grace of God start accepting manuscripts by winter 2015. 7. You call yourself a “Neophyte Writer”. How many books do you have to write before you consider yourself a “learned” writer instead of a “neophyte”? What’s the most important thing you’ve learned on your journey as a “beginner writer”? There’s always something to learn, and I’m always a new writer to the reader, no matter how prolific I am, so I’m not sure when I’ll reach that seasoned status. The most important thing I’ve learned as a newbie writer is that you have to tell your story and live your story. You can’t let other people’s idea of what works stifle your productivity and creativity. When you’re on the path to your goals, you’ll get a lot of advice, but you have to live your life and work in a way that works best for you and no one else.
