Some of my quilts are old and stored. You can cool your quilt by sitting it outside in the sun and fresh air before using it in your home. One of the easiest ways to do this is to leave the clothes in the fresh air for at least an hour on a sunny day.
Preserving your handmade Gee’s Bend item for generations to come requires special care. As some pieces may be old heirlooms, I recommend testing for colorfastness before washing. To do this, take a damp, white cloth and rub it over the colored fabrics of your quilt. If any color transfers to the white fabric, washing the quilt will cause discoloration and fading.

If you have completed the colorfastness test and there is no color transfer, wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild, mild detergent; Or soak your quilt in soapy water, rinse gently, then repeat. No chlorine bleach. Drying, dry on a drying rack or hang outside to air dry. Finish with a hot iron, if desired.
Some older quilts may become stained or discolored due to their age. Due to its delicate nature, be careful about cleaning your quilt as needed, as it can strip the color that created the original style and tone that you may never get back. This pattern helped me a lot in making my first single star quilt. I changed the length of the strips from 10″ to avoid waste. I was making jelly roll strips and didn’t have enough fabric to make a separate 10″ set. Great job!
