This is a quilt my grandmother made about 100 years ago. The lone star pattern has extra points and I don’t understand why. I used to hang out in his bedroom when I was little. He often told me stories about growing up in the mountains of Pennsylvania. He died at the age of 97. I am 22 years old and expecting my first child. I made my own maternity clothes and she made them. His stitches were perfect.

This free Texas Bluebonnet pattern combines basic papers into a 6-inch finished quilt block. You will need several strips of blue fabric. In addition, choose a little green and background fabric – scrap or solid. It looks great either way.

The Lone Star quilt, made in the 1860s, was one of many quilts recently displayed by Deborah Birkett at the Peacemakers Guild conference in Marshall, Texas. After the business meeting, Birkett was introduced as the guest speaker. Using her book as the basis of her presentation, Burkett displayed many quilts from the early days of Texas and talked about the importance of quilt preservation.

Many of these textiles were “saved” when Birkett found them in junk shops and antique malls, and two were purchased at mule and tractor auctions. Over time, Birkett did extensive research on the patterns and fabrics of these quilts.
Originally, this Lone Star quilt ended up in a small antique/junk store where Birkett bought it after it was sold at a Lufkin estate sale. The quilting is amazing – very large roses sewn with very small stitches. I bit the hole. Also, it got wet and I let it dry without rinsing it. The existing soil floated to the top and dried there. Luckily it wasn’t rusted. If this is the case, the quilt will need to be professionally cleaned as the rust will destroy the fabric.
This giant star quilt pattern was originally known as the Math Star. A name used on the coast of England and in the eastern United States. Other names are Star of Bethlehem and Lone Star. When one of the earliest examples of this quilt was made before the fall of the Alamo, it was called the Lone Star. The pattern quickly became a symbol of Texas independence and later became a celebration of statehood in 1845.
Pioneer families were established in Cherokee County prior to statehood. These settlers left behind relatives in states such as Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Alabama. To prepare for the journey west, many followed printed guidebooks that instructed them to leave home with enough food.

They experienced many hardships on the way and were restless in the wagon for many months until they reached their destination. Along the way, quilts have been used in a variety of ways. Since the wagons had no suspensions and the roads were bumpy, many used cleats to soften the ride.
Quilts are valuable heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. Name or friendship quilts contain embroidered signatures and have been a genealogical record of family and community members since the days when women sat around wooden frames hanging from the ceiling.
In Marshall, Birkett exhibited a Cherokee County Mixon Depression-era community quilt. This quilt is embroidered with the names of both my grandmother and great-grandmother’s mothers, as well as other members of the community.
