In this activity, students will use global temperature data to build models and compare short-term trends to long-term trends. They will then determine whether global temperatures are increasing based on the data.

Scientists have concluded that our climate is changing, the global temperature is rising, and this increase in temperature has serious consequences. But in an age where information is contested, how do students separate fact from fiction? Simple: examine the raw data and calculate.
Weather and climate are two terms that are often confused and refer to phenomena with widely different spatial and temporal scales. Weather refers to atmospheric conditions that occur locally over short periods of time – from minutes to hours or days. Familiar examples include rain, snow, clouds, wind, flood or thunder. Remember that the weather is local and temporary. Climate, on the other hand, refers to long-term regional or global averages of temperature, humidity, and precipitation patterns over seasons, years, or decades. Climate can be regional or global and long term; The weather is local, short-term. Bad weather in your area – rain or drought – may or may not be a symptom of global climate change. We have to observe weather patterns over many years to know.
Global warming refers to the trend of rising temperatures on the planet since the beginning of the 20th century – and especially since the 1970s – due to increased fossil fuel emissions since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Although there are many different greenhouse gases, the amount of carbon dioxide, or CO2, has been increasing over the past century. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by 39%. An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases makes the Earth’s greenhouse warmer. Globally, since 1880 the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Celsius) compared to the mid-20th century baseline (measured between 1951 and 1980).
This short video explains why Earth’s temperature is rising, how we know, and what NASA is doing to study the causes and effects.

Climate change refers to a wide range of global phenomena caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels, which add greenhouse gases to the Earth’s atmosphere. These events include the increasing temperature trends described by global warming, but also include changes such as sea level rise; mass ice loss in Greenland, Antarctica, the Arctic, and mountain glaciers worldwide; Changes of flowers and plants; and extreme weather events.
Climate change is the cause of rising global temperatures. But how do we know that global temperatures are rising? We analyze temperature data, including daily temperature readings and monthly or annual average temperatures. The longest record of direct temperature measurements is the Central England Temperature Data Series, beginning in 1659. The longest world record dates back to 1880. Data is received from ground stations and ships around the world. More recently, satellites have been used to measure temperatures in the troposphere, the lowest level of our atmosphere. Polar ice cores and oceans can be probed for temperatures that predate these modern records. Ice cores store thousands of years of weather data. Using ice cores, scientists reconstructed climate data for the past 750,000 years, showing seven ice ages, each associated with a warmer international climate like ours today. (The difference between these intermittent periods and today is the increasing rate of climate change—a rate that is directly related to human presence and the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.) Ocean sediment cores Adds more data. Marine Fossils and Sedimentary Methodology. The oxygen isotope in marine fossils gives us information about the temperature of the ocean when the fossils formed, and volcanic strata provide data about historical events such as volcanic eruptions.
This activity allows students to examine real scientific data and draw their own conclusions about trends in global average temperatures.
Note: Global temperature data are presented as anomalies, which measure the number of deviations from a reference value or long-term average value. A positive anomaly indicates that the observed temperature was higher than the reference value. A negative variance indicates that the observed temperature was lower than the reference value. Anomalies more accurately describe changes in climate over large areas (which have very different absolute temperatures) than absolute temperatures. They also provide a frame of reference that allows for more meaningful comparisons between locations and more accurate calculations of temperature trends. For better conceptual understanding, students can calculate the absolute temperature from the anomalies by adding a reference value to each anomaly. For elementary students, the global mean annual temperature data set is shown as absolute temperature for simplicity.

Here is an example of how graph manipulation can lead casual observers to make incorrect assumptions about the data. Here we chose a scale that is far from ideal for the data set, so the graph has been smoothed and made too small to see details and trends.+ Enlarge Image Bud Incubator Journal Letter Email, link or fax. Why do fridge/freezer temperature records take temperature readings? 1. They indicate that food is stored at temperatures that limit the growth of bacteria that cause food spoilage and/or food poisoning. 2.
At least it should be every 2 hours. The min/max thermometer should be much lower than expected.
The temperature log is probably the most widely used checklist for monitoring food safety. This is an important piece of paper in your food safety management system that helps ensure safe food handling and storage.

A temperature log is a printed or handwritten document that records the temperature of food and medicine storage areas to ensure that temperature levels are safe and things remain in good condition.
Thermometers have been used for centuries and are the simplest method of monitoring the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer. Typically, a technician or other team member visits each refrigerator or freezer at least twice a day and records the readings of the thermometer that monitors the internal temperature.
