I used to visit Sydney and like many tourists I walked around the building, but I never gave the building time or thought it was worth it. Looking back now, I find this strange! I would usually wander aimlessly in front of the magnificent building absorbing every detail. Architecture is my weakness, books and photos are great for reference, but nothing beats seeing the details in a building and appreciating the space it creates.

In 1956 New South Wales held an international competition for the National Opera House at Sydney’s Bennelong Point. It attracted over 220 entries from 32 countries. Young Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the competition and was hailed by architecture critic Siegfried Gideon for opening a new chapter in contemporary architecture.
The Opera House is an architectural masterpiece completed in 1973 and listed as a National Heritage Site in 2005.

In 2007, the building was inscribed on the World Heritage List: “The Sydney Opera House is a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. “It represents the diversity of creativity in architectural form and structural design, a stunning urban sculpture carefully placed on a world-renowned iconic building with spectacular water views.” UNESCO
