Superhero Felt Mask – I previously shared this as a blog post for One Creative Mommy. I am happy to share it again here today. AND now that it’s October, have you decided what to make your kids for Halloween? This is great even if you are not very smart.

My boys always have a million ideas of what they want to be for Halloween. They can’t decide, so I usually do something simple at the last minute. So… if you’re looking for an easy Halloween costume or costume, these simple felt masks are for you! Iron Man, Batman and the Hulk can run around your house this afternoon.

For a solid color mask, cut two pieces of color. Sew around the outer edges and eye holes to make the mask. Sew a ribbon to the side for binding.

Then cut out the pattern piece for each additional color and sew it onto the back.

Add ribbon to the side to make a tie. Then sew each piece together or use hot glue to hold them together.

This year’s chosen theme is Superheroes and Princesses! I decided that the boys would get great masks and the girls would get crowns, which you can see here. So the superhero masks I came up with. You can also attach it if you don’t have a sewing machine, or use foam or paper if you don’t like the look. I did each of these with at least two pieces of fabric so they wouldn’t fall apart. And because I want you to be able to do it too, I have a superhero mask tutorial for you to use.

First, cut out the superhero mask templates. Cut out both the general shape and the main color. Then cut out all the details (letter A, hair, etc.) and sew only on the top. For the Spiderman and Thor masks, I simply cut out the pattern and marked the fabric as I went along to sew each line in the right place. I just use a black thread on my machine, using a regular stitch. Sorry for the bad lighting.

Superhero Mask Tutorial + Pattern

Next, cut the bark about 14 inches long. Place the two boards together, taping (and taping) about an inch of glue on each side.

Sew around the entire outside of the mask and eyes with threads that match the fabric. Cut it out and you’re done. BE CAREFUL not to cut the skin while cutting!!! I did it THREE times! UGH! The front is finished.

And here is the finished side cover. Stronger than two cans and the seams are less scratchy on children’s faces.

And of course Evan was very happy to be on camera. He thought this picture was funny: “I feel sorry for Iron Man.”

Thanks for the samples!!! Before cutting, I used a seam allowance to glue the two panels together. Then open the sides slightly to insert the skin. It was very useful!

Oh my, how beautiful! I was lazy and just put it together with the glue gun and used a pen and sharpener for the accent, but it turned out pretty. My kids (and my husband and I) will have so much fun with them! Thank you so much for sharing your designs!

Hi, thanks for the pattern. I have a question. You mentioned that I cut the skin at 14″. For the child’s head I do this at 20″. You’d think 14″ would be too narrow. Unfortunately, he lives outside, so I can’t test him. Any suggestions?
