State Symbols Of Kentucky

State Symbols Of Kentucky – Humans first came to what is now Kentucky at least 14,000 years ago, possibly after mammoths and other big game migrated here. Thousands of years later the Cherokee, Shawnee, Chickasaw, and Yuchi nations lived in American lands.

It was not until 1774 that the first white stable was founded. Pioneers James Harrod and Daniel Boone founded other settlements in those years.

The eastern part of Kentucky today was considered part of Virginia, but in 1792 it was declared its own state. The western part of Kentucky was added later in 1818 after it was purchased from the Chickasaw tribe.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Kentucky was officially neutral. However, 140 thousand citizens fought in the war.

Most experts think that the name Kentucky comes from a Native American language, but they disagree on which one. The area name Kah-ten-tah-teh may come from Wyandot, which can roughly be translated as “Land of Tomorrow”. It is also possible that it comes from the Shawnee area name, Kain-tuck-ee, which means “at the head of the river.” Or it may be derived from the Iroquoian or Mohawk called Kentucke, which means between the meadows.

Kentucky is bordered by Indiana and Ohio to the north, where the Ohio River creates a curving border. It has Virginia to the west (separated from Kentucky by the Big Sandy River) and Virginia to the east, Tennessee to the south, and Missouri and Illinois to the west.

Kentucky has six distinct geographic regions. Farther east is the Mountain Range, part of the Appalachian mountain range. There are forests, high and narrow ridges, five shapeless valleys, plus the highest point in the city, the Great Black Mountain. This is also the country of the coal fields – 10 miles of 40 coal fields under this area, called the Eastern Kentucky Coal field.

Go west in the region of Knoba shoes, where erosion has created a hundred knot mountains, called monadnocki. It is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

In the center of the Knobs is the Bluegrass region, named after the blue-green grass that grows there. The hills, sinkholes, caves, and springs were all created by weathering or breaking down of the local limestone.

The Pennyroyal region (also zea Pennyrile) is named after the type of mint plant that grows there. This is a rocky area with many trees, lakes and caves. One of these caves is Mammoth Cave, the longest in the world – it stretches for 350 miles!

Surrounded by Pennyroyal is the Western Coalfield region, a mountainous region containing more than 4,680 square miles of coal. John James Audubon State Park, the most famous artist and naturalist, is in this region.

Black bears, bobcats, red foxes, mink, and river otters are common Kentucky mammals. Look up in the sky and you might see a peregrine falcon, a bald eagle, a mountain bluebird, a Kentucky sparrow or a northern cardinal (the state bird). Avoid ground and tree reptiles such as six-lined stadium, bark beetle, or eastern horned snake. Amphibians like the Kentucky spring salamander or the Jefferson salamander hang out near the water.

The tulip tree (state tree) is native to the eastern United States, as is the Kentucky coffee tree. Other native trees are red maple, sassafras, northern red oak, and bald cypress. Look for colorful native flowers such as wild dove, purple coneflower, dwarf iris, and the endangered Kentucky lady’s slipper, a genus of orchids.

With nearly half the state covered in forests, it’s no wonder Kentucky is one of the top three hardwood producers in the country. It is the third largest producer of coal in the United States, due to its large natural coal reserves. Kick is another great resource.
