Spiderman Pumpkin Design – In this case I chose an interesting image of Spiderman. It is important to choose an image with sufficient contrast to allow for good light/shadow play. For Spiderman, the webbing presents a challenge but makes for a stunning visual presence.
Once the pattern is drawn, you need to choose what to keep and what to go. To get a detailed pumpkin like this, you need to use different carving depths. I usually use a 4 depth system:

You can see my legend on the uploaded picture. The final pattern only has the leg… the webbing is gray and his suit is white… it should be reversed but I switched it to make drawing the pattern easier.

Next, the pattern is glued to the pumpkin. The key here is that you need to start with one area (usually the top for me) and glue there. Then you should shape the paper around the pumpkin so that the main image is not distorted. To do this, I make several cuts and folds in non-essential parts of the pattern paper while smoothing the main image on the surface.
You can see a large cut on the right side of the pattern. The more non-essential parts of the pattern are cut and folded, the simpler the main image will be.
Once the pattern is on and smooth, you need to transfer it. I do this by punching holes in the edges of the hard lines of the pattern and just running over the lines with firm pressure. I usually use a mechanical pencil without pushing the lead out and tracing the pattern. This creates very shallow indentations in the skin of the pumpkin. This is visible when the pattern is removed and traced. I use a Sharpie to trace the indentation.
If you look closely you can see the flat indentation of the webbing on the first pictures.

After the pattern is transferred, carving can begin. It is best to start with webbing. I created the webbing using a combination of a Dremel and an X-Acto knife. With the Dremel, I just used a blunt sanding point and sanded about an inch into the pumpkin flesh.
Using a razor blade, I scored about an inch into the flesh, then removed the pieces as I went.
After cutting the webbing in a specific area, use an X-Acto knife with a flattened blade to easily peel the skin from the areas between the webbing. This provides enough light to see the interweb areas clearly.
The eyes are simply cut out with a serrated pumpkin carving blade. All thickness should be removed where the eyes are.

The remaining webbing and legs are worked in the same manner as previously indicated until the pattern is essentially complete.
Highlights are added (lighter parts of the head, around the edge of the left knee, left leg, etc.) Again using a serrated knife cut through the pumpkin to full thickness in those areas. This allows more light to shine through, resulting in much more depth.
The background fabric can be roughly outlined on the pumpkin with a Sharpie. In this case, I created a simple web design to match her outfit.
Then use a dremel on low to medium speed to go right through the skin of the pumpkin. This in turn only lets in some light and creates a great background effect.

For a pumpkin like this, a simple candle isn’t bright enough to create the desired lighting effect. Cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin to insert the electric light source.
To keep the pumpkin from overheating and spoiling, I prefer to use a simple table lamp with a cooler (bluer) spectrum than a warmer (more orange) spectrum fluorescent bulb.
