Our version of the famous snow ballerinas combines two great ideas – snow ballerinas originally created by a Russian blogger named Lelia (sadly her site is no longer online) and the work of Julia Monroe at AllSparkledUp.com.

What I love about Julie’s paper ballerinas is the addition of colored glitter to create the ballet shoes, top and some bling in the ballerina’s hair. She used some tile flowers to create the skirt, but I think snow ballerinas are more fun and families are more likely to have plain paper instead of the pretty tile things Julie used.

I hope Julie doesn’t mind that I tagged her picture. I wanted to make sure people gave him credit for the jewelry idea and the honey idea.

Not wanting to infringe on anyone’s copyrights, I started my snowball project by creating three ballerina patterns. I tried to make them with good finger positions but that involved too much cutting for such a simple project.

The skirts in my snowball patterns are designed to help hold and spread the cut snowflakes. If you want to use my patterns for other projects, you may need to remove or replace the skirt. Also, depending on how your snowflakes turn out, sometimes cutting more of the skirt makes it better.

Just click on the patterns to see full size versions. I tried to make the lines lighter so that if you miss one while cutting, it won’t show. The file is a simple .gif to save bandwidth and ensure everyone is published the same.

I would recommend printing the ballet flat patterns on cardstock. Using regular copy/20 pound paper works but ballerinas may not hold up as well. It will also hold up better being glued and glittered.

After you’ve printed and cut out your ballerina patterns, break out the glue and glitter to add the blouse, ballerinas, and headband. If you want to skip this step, your ballerinas can look even better if you cut two small pieces over the patterns they have.

I generally use copy paper and fold one corner to the other side of the paper to create a folded triangle with a little extra on top. Fold the 2nd corner to the 1st and then fold a third time in the same way – keeping the tip. You will end up with a four point snowflake.

For the snowballs, I like to fold them one more time to form a figure 8. The paper layers will be harder to cut. So, I generally make a curved bottom to create a skirt and make one or two cuts on one side of the folded edges. Then, I open the last fold and cut the snow in the usual way. Hopefully, that and the pictures will show you what I mean.

After opening your snowsuit, gently fold (don’t fold) your ballerina and slide her legs and skirt through the snow. You will need an opening about an inch wider. Don’t worry if it’s too small, just take your snow back and cut a slightly larger opening.

And, now that the curtain has fully risen and the orchestra is playing the Dance of the Sugar Feather Fairies, here are the two remaining ballerinas. I left one unadorned for comparison.

For this project, I learned quickly; the brighter, the more beautiful the finished project. Our prettiest results came from using a very fine glitter that was like dust.

We tried using stuff from a big bottle of cheap glitter that we thought was a bargain at the 100 cent store. It looked awful; it bunched up in pieces and the toe shoes came out looking like boots.

This project is best done with glitter that is almost powdery. The things we used came in small packets; again from the 100 cent store.I think it was sold for nail art, rather than makeup. It was amazing how well it went considering how small the containers were.

If you don’t have time to hunt down a good glitter, we found this glitter pack on Amazon – it even has a pink color that’s almost identical to the one we used; and it also has a beautiful purple.

Let’s face it, most artists love the glittery, glittery beauty that can only come from glitter. But, alas, no one likes (well, maybe me) to see their carpets and floors sparkle after the makeover is complete.

Make your glitter glue on a clean sheet of paper. If you care, you can lift the excess and use it on another ballerina or put it back in the container. At the very least, working on paper will help prevent your home, your children, and even family pets from becoming as shiny as your snowflake ballerinas.
