Now you can probably guess where I’m going, yes, the half-face Spidey (2 minutes 55 seconds) took less time than the smaller arm design (3 minutes 26 seconds).
That is why I am writing about this today. It’s very common for clients to tell me, “We have a lot of kids, so we only want small designs,” or “We don’t need a lot…just a little something on their hands or cheeks,” or “We don’t have time. We don’t have much, so we don’t want big projects.” .
In all cases, event organizers try to communicate that they want to reach as many people as possible. The problem is that their decision to stick with “small” designs is based on faulty thinking.
Simple Face Painting Designs That Are Quick And Easy!
In our recent events, we have had adults approach us to see if we can do smaller projects to reach more people. They hadn’t actually scheduled our work hours. They just saw the product and assumed that if there was so much makeup on the face, it must have taken a lot of time and smaller versions would be faster. Here’s why this assumption is wrong, as brilliantly explained by an artist I know:
Have you ever taken on a home improvement project where you had to paint rooms in your home?
Which room took longer? A living room with wide, open walls and lots of room to move around where you can use a paint roller that has been dipped once to cover a large area before dipping again? Or a kitchen where you have to tape around cupboards, windows and all sorts of other fixtures and use smaller brushes and carefully work the small edges for detail?
For a seasoned, professional artist, painting all that red on a canvas with a full face with big brushes allows most of us to move quickly. If the baby moves or gets distracted, we can easily recover and our lines will be smooth and clean. In addition, when the child touches his face and stains the design, it is set in seconds.

But for this little Spidey design, that’s a different story. The control and precision required for such a small design slows us down, as even the slightest movement can cause a sharp oval-shaped right angle to Spider-Man’s head. (If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see where the outline is very thick because he moved.) Similarly, when this little boy touched the red, his fingerprint smeared the tape. Thank God it didn’t turn white! It is difficult to restore the white of the eye after it has been stained with red. And I haven’t found any boys who want their Spider-Man to have pink eyes! :o)
In terms of control and precision, the same goes for butterflies. For me, drawing something tiny on a baby’s cheek that’s happy and smiling (which I love) requires more focus and calm than larger designs.
The half mask butterfly (#3) and the pink/blue cheek (#1) took about the same time, and the full mask was faster than both! But you probably didn’t vote that way! If given a choice, most kids want the bigger design! And, I’ll be honest… I love people’s grief and guilt when they see the final product of larger designs… especially when they’re followed by, “I can’t believe how fast you did that!”
Yes, during the school carnival, when parents and 5th graders volunteer to paint faces for the first time, it’s good to put them in simple, small designs. But when you hire a professional, please rest assured that we will always give you the best and fastest work to meet the coverage parameters promised in our contract! What takes so long isn’t really the art itself…it’s all the variables outside of our control. (For more information on proper pacing and coverage, see my article on Good, Fast, and Cheap.) Maybe it should be noted here that there are parents who come to us to “go faster” with other children. but when it’s their own child. turn around, they want us to waste our time. :o)

It is true that we can generally simplify designs. However, today’s kids are used to wearing face paint GOOD! Forcing us to oversimplify our design is like adding too much water to Kool-Aid. At a certain point, nobody wants it if it’s too mixed. Kids love face painting!
