Notice that Jesus was in the tomb for three days and three nights in this passage. This is no coincidence.
Observation: In chapter 2, Jonah quotes several verses from the Psalms. He certainly didn’t have a Bible in his belly. I know these poems by heart. So, whenever you are in trouble, you should try to spend time in His Word. I hope it’s never in the belly of a whale.
He went to Nineveh and declared that the city would be destroyed in 40 days. How did people respond? They fasted and repented. The king declared a fast for men and animals. Jonah would have been a great prophet to stop an entire pagan city from repenting and fasting.
God turned to them and the Gentiles felt His mercy, so the disaster stopped.
