Sample Of Hospital Billing Statement – Imagine what a patient-friendly billing statement looks like in your mind. How many fonts does it use? Is she overwhelmed by an overwhelming amount of information? Is there a balance between font size and weight that guides your eye to the most important information on the page? Your answer to all these questions should be yes.
This is because the design of your statements is very important. This can make the accounts more interesting to look at so that they can attract the attention of your patients. You want your customers to notice your bills as they wade through endless piles of mail to pay you.

A well-designed health care law also encourages payment because it is easy to understand. Recipients will have no problem finding out what they owe and how they can pay it.
Fillable Medical Invoice
Our first example uses space to achieve a patient-friendly design. Even though there is a lot of information on this page, it doesn’t overwhelm the reader…
There is a balanced white space so that it does not appear cramped. Looking at this example, you will naturally find your eyes jumping from section to section. The methodically placed white space will guide you to the most important parts of the broken down information.
The practice that created this example wants their patients to see these four components in this order…
This design uses shape, such as a dark green field for the total in the activity table and a light green field for online payments. But even the spaces in this statement separate the information as if it had an invisible shape around it.

The designer could have enlarged the text or rearranged the information to fill the page. But instead, the designer used white space to follow the statement and make it easier to read. Negative space separates sections, even if they don’t use closing shapes to separate them.
This example emphasizes colored shapes to achieve patient-friendly billing. First, the colors match the company’s logo to reinforce its brand. Second, patients can easily identify who the bill belongs to, so they know what the statement is for and who to pay.
The green shapes scattered all over the surface also help the accent. Important information is inside and surrounded by greenery to attract attention. These shape various areas such as service desks, aging buckets and credit card boxes. They help prevent information from getting mixed up with unrelated details, and color draws attention to areas.
Of all the examples so far, this one has the most information. Having a lot of information on one page is overwhelming. However, it is easy to follow because of the design technique it uses.
Pay My Bill
Arrange the elements of the visual hierarchy based on importance. When a patient receives a bill, they want to know what their charges are and how much they owe. This statement uses a visual step-by-step process so the recipient has no questions or concerns.
The largest element on the page is the table, which also uses the most colors. So the patient perceives it as the most important element. This is a field that contains a list of services and costs that are linked to each other. A lighter shade of blue highlights the most important line of the description to make it easier to read. This helps align the text between all the columns, so it’s easy to determine which charge corresponds to which item.
When patients look at the table, blue alerts them to another important detail. They then look at the aging buckets and the “amount owed” box just below the table because of their proximity.
Once patients determine what they owe, they want to know how to pay. The shape, size and color emphasize the credit card holder as another important component. The details are inside a rectangular box, like a description table. It’s smaller than the table, so patients don’t notice it at first, but it’s bigger than the other parts, so they know it’s still important.
Your Billing Statement
The box also uses a bold blue color with rectangles, credit card graphics and lines to draw attention. Since the graphic is in color, it is necessary to highlight which payment methods are acceptable.
Patients may still have questions or concerns after reading these sections. They may want to pay by check or have questions about their fees or payment options. That’s why “Charges Due:” and “Billing Questions?” The text is in blue.
This makes it easy to find, so the patient does not have to spend time looking for it. If they have questions about making a payment but can’t find a way to contact you, chances are they won’t make the payment.
Using repeat helps repeat important details on this patient-friendly bill. This design uses repetition of shape, logo, color and information.
Understanding Itemized Hospital Bills
Rectangles with the same rounded edges around each area create consistency. A bill with unified elements is easier to navigate because there is not much contrast. With so much contrast, it’s hard to determine what to focus on as our eye jumps all over the page. But with consistent shapes, this statement doesn’t use much contrast.
Repeating the logo as a watermark in the detail table makes it clear who the account belongs to. Consistent colors help maintain the unity of the company brand in this design. There isn’t as much color as the previous few examples, but it’s effective by highlighting the most important parts.
Color has not only important details, but also repetition. The total amount is displayed four times as the main detail and the account number and payment date are repeated twice. These details are also in different parts so that the patient does not forget them. Color highlights them inside the credit card box to remind the patient how much they are paying and when they are due.
This example uses an element that most of these other designs do not. Includes a visual representation of expenses with a caption to explain the breakdown of the total.
How Do I Pay My Bill?
Reading numbers and lists of services can be confusing for some patients. Unless they pull out a calculator, they may not understand how the fees equal the amount owed. This leads to unnecessary phone calls to your practice asking for clarification. You don’t want every patient explaining their costs and totals after every visit.
Showing them in a visual and comprehensive way helps patients to understand themselves. If possible, use visual aids to convey information that the general population may not understand. This can save confusion and time for your patients and your team.
After looking at these examples, you should have a better idea of how to improve your statements. An important note is that each of the examples we discussed in this blog post use similar typography styles.
