Reindeer Costume Pattern – A deer or stag is a fun and easy Halloween costume. A deer Halloween costume can work for a boy or a girl, just adjust the head piece.
This deer Halloween costume will take a few stitches by hand if you want to save the outfit used as the basis of the costume. If you don’t mind, you can glue the felt pieces directly to the clothes.
Reindeer Costume Pattern
I used 8 1/2 x 11” pieces of felt (only 3 pieces of each are taken). You will start with all the brown clothes in your child’s size. The shoes can be anything, but black would be great (to look like hooves).
Knit Deer Hat
Use a piece of white felt and turn the corners to make an oval. Using double thread and a running stitch around the outside of the oval, sew this to the front of the brown shirt.
Cut a series of about 12-13 circles that are a variety of sizes 1-2″ in diameter. Sew them randomly to the back of the brown shirt.
Cut a heart shape from white felt about 4-5 inches long. Cut a second brown felt heart slightly smaller than the first. Sew this to the bottom back of the brown shirt, sew through both layers of felt. This is the tail.
Cut 1 1/2-2” strips of black felt to use around the cuffs of the brown shirt and around the cuffs of the pants. Good hands on these. These are hooves in case you were wondering!

The head piece for the deer Halloween costume is made using a brown ribbon OR a brown cap (or a cap that is painted brown with acrylic paint). Our deer costume was made with a headband.
To make the ears, fold a piece of brown felt in half, hamburger style. Cut a tab about 5″ long and about 21/2″ wide WITHOUT cutting the folded edge. Wrap one ear around the head about 2” from the center and then hot glue the two ear pieces. Repeat with the second ear 2” in the other direction from the center. Hot glue. Cut two pieces of white felt that are slightly smaller than the ear and glue one to the front of each felt ear.
Find two branches in the yard that are about 6-7 inches long and forked/branched to look like antlers. Working one at a time, put a large circle of hot glue on the top of the head and keep the horns in it until it cools. Add more hot glue to the base and hold until cool. Repeat until the horns feel strong. Then repeat with the second horn.
A few flowers can be attached to the base of the horns for a girl, a bit of floral moss for a boy or leave it plain.

The second option is to use the brown hat to mount the ears and horns. Glue each ear so that the felt does not open into two flaps. Then attach the two ears to the left and right sides of the brim of the hat.
Hot glue the horns to the front of the hat between the ears. You can still add flowers to the brim of the hat if you like.
