Red Seal 2 Dollar Bill – Until the 1963 series, $2 bills were issued alongside other forms of US currency, such as silver certificates and Federal Reserve notes. All three types of banknotes were in circulation together; they are easily recognized by the different colored Treasury seals and serial numbers – the familiar Federal Reserve notes are green, while the US notes were red and the silver certificate was blue.

The most unusual and rarest of the three types of bills was the two-dollar bill. There is a portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the front and a view of Jefferson’s home at Monticello on the back. The red stamp is on the front right.

The US $2 bill was last produced in the 1963 series and has been out of circulation for over 40 years. It’s a fascinating and rarely seen piece of American history.

Over the past 60 years, the “red stamp” of the two-dollar bill has disappeared from circulation. For decades, the only notes in circulation were Federal Reserve notes, and on the rare occasion that US notes appear in banks, they are sent to the Treasury and destroyed.

Silver certificates were once in circulation along with other forms of currency such as Federal Reserve notes. Each silver certificate was backed by a face value of silver dollars or silver bullion in the United States Treasury, and holders of the notes could actually exchange them for silver.

The last silver certificate ever issued was the 1957 Series $1 silver certificate. Unlike today’s Federal Reserve Notes, which have green seals and serial numbers, silver certificates are characterized by blue Treasury seals and blue serial numbers. Silver Certificates were last redeemable in silver until June 24, 1968, but are still legal tender.

Most of these historic $1 silver certificates were worn or destroyed in circulation half a century ago or more. If the Silver Certificates are redeemed at the bank today, the government will destroy them. As a result, there are very few of them under any circumstances. Like today’s $1 bill, the silver $1 certificate features the famous portrait of George Washington by artist Gilbert Stuart. United States banknotes were introduced during the Civil War in 1862 in denominations ranging from one to one thousand dollars. The $2 denomination remained when we switched to small bills in 1928 and continued until the early 1960s when the notes were discontinued. The deuce was reintroduced in 1976 as a Federal Reserve note. Although they are still legal tender, their red stamps and serial numbers make them great collectibles.

The 1963 series of US banknotes were printed in relatively small numbers by today’s standards and were widely used until the type was discontinued in the 1960s. These like new $2 red stamps are a collector’s favorite!

The US two-dollar bill ($2) is the nominal value of the currency of the United States. The obverse of the note features a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States (1801-1809). The reverse is engraved c. John Trumbull’s 1818 painting of the Declaration of Independence.

Throughout the existence of the two-dollar bill prior to 1929 as a large-sized note, it was issued as a United States note, a National Bank note, a silver certificate, a Treasury note or “coin”, and a Federal Reserve note. When the US currency was changed to its current size, the $2 bill was issued only as a United States bill. Production continued until 1966, when United States notes were phased out, and the $2 denomination was discontinued until 1976, when it was reissued as Federal Reserve notes with a new reverse design.
