Ra Door Decs – Congratulations to all the winners and participants of our second Door Dec contest! There were so many creative submissions and it was a difficult decision, but we are happy to have a new wall art for the 2018-2019 academic year. Here are some of our winning artists…
I am a resident assistant at Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri. I am a Studio Art major with a focus on painting and a minor in sculpture and graphics. I love to create works of art by hand and door ornaments are no exception. I like to play the ukulele and sing. I like to play any sport, but especially frisbee and soccer, and I’m a student leader in college. This means that I love to share the hope of Jesus with others!
Ra Door Decs
My favorite thing about being an RA is being intentional about talking with my residents. I love being able to turn a lockout into an opportunity to make my residents’ day better. I like to ask them how they are doing and encourage them. Additionally, I am so grateful that my RA position allows me to get by without college debt.
You Gotta Do What Makes You Happy
My toucan is based on a DIY layered paper project on Pinterest. I chose to submit the toucan because it was my creation and not someone else’s recreation. I usually do a set of door decorations that go with the overall theme, but it’s different for each suite
(4 residents) because I like to make them unique and it’s more fun for me that way. I love taking the time to make really cool door decorations, plus my residents and housemates love them! For this set my theme was a tropical island. In addition to toucans, I made lifeguards, leaves, pineapples and sharks, among other things. I used paper and an x-acto knife to create the layers and decorated with a pen.
My name is Amberlyn Saw and I am a current senior at UC Berkeley double majoring in Business Administration and Molecular Environmental Biology. I have been working as a resident assistant for three years and my favorite part of the job is meeting so many amazing people. From connecting with the residents during Waffle Wednesdays to singing karaoke at 3am with my classmates, residential life has been a huge part of my college experience. Besides being an RA, I enjoy hiking, running, baking, and volunteering at the local marine mammal hospital!
I first learned how to laser cut wood from a fellow RA last year. Since then I’ve been a big fan of designing intricate patterns, like recreating the Hogwarts crest or photography and wood engraving. As a big proponent of sustainability, I am also so excited to be part of the inaugural staff of the first LEED Gold certified residence hall on the Berkeley campus. That’s why I wanted to emphasize Berkeley’s commitment to being more environmentally friendly through my gate statements. I created a plant themed succulent design in Adobe Illustrator and carved the image out of birch wood.
An Ra’s Life For Me
My name is Madeline Gossett and I am a sophomore at Edwardsville University in Southern Illinois. I am majoring in Elementary Education and hope to get my Junior High Certificate in Spanish and Math. When I’m not working or studying, I like to read, run, be outside and take pictures.
This is my first semester as an RA and I’m really enjoying it so far. My favorite part of the job is making close connections with others in the community.
My door design was inspired by my love for green. I especially love cacti because they remind me of my mother. It’s the only plant she can keep alive, but don’t tell her I said that. I’m already looking forward to next December and can’t wait to see what the rest of the semester has in store for me as an RA.
I am a senior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) majoring in studio art with a concentration in new media and design and a minor in business. My favorite part of being an RA is creating creative signs and door decorations for my residents and turning bland hallways into decorated walkways that lead to residents’ homes away from home. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, watching the Panthers play football, and eating at CookOut.
