If you prefer to draw your design on your pumpkin instead of carving or punching a hole, a simple black sharpie will do wonders.

Chopsticks are a great way to correct mistakes. If you accidentally cut a part of the pumpkin and don’t worry, you can always glue it back together using a toothpick to attach the part to the pumpkin.

Vaseline is a must for a carved pumpkin. Use the jelly to line the carved parts of the pumpkin and keep it fresher for longer.

If you’re new to carving or just don’t want the stress of carving a huge pumpkin, it’s best to find a pumpkin that’s easy to carve. We recommend using a golden pumpkin because it is one of the easiest pumpkin varieties to carve and is still a medium weight and bulky pumpkin. If you want a bigger pumpkin (but not necessarily the easiest to carve), Gold Rush pumpkins are worth checking out.

When choosing a pumpkin to carve, check the pumpkin for rotten parts and discolored parts. It’s best to find a pumpkin without blemishes if you can!

There is no right or wrong way to cut a pumpkin, but cutting the bottom is the best way to preserve the pumpkin after carving. I find that if I’m carving a pumpkin for decoration, it’s best to cut off the bottom of the pumpkin with a pumpkin saw, but if you want to use the pumpkin as a candy bucket, cut off the top to make a ‘lid’.

The main thing that shrinks the pumpkin is the lack of moisture. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin and remove the stem, you actually start the decay process and the rot starts at the top and moves down, destroying your pumpkin.

If you cut off the bottom of the pumpkin and leave the stem intact, the decomposition process will be much slower and your pumpkin will last longer. Cut pumpkin usually lasts three to five days, unless you live in a colder climate. There are other tips you can follow to preserve your pumpkin after you cut it: Scroll down.

Raise your (burnt) hand if you have a nightmare about putting a candle in a pumpkin! Every year I burned my hand when I put a candle in a pumpkin or a tea light in a pumpkin. I reached down and the flames reached up and burned me. To avoid this, I would try throwing a lighted tea candle at the pumpkin in the hope that the flame wouldn’t go out. What a nightmare!

The Free Pumpkin Carving Stencils You Need To Try This Year

To combat this unnecessary stress, you can simply cut out the bottom of the pumpkin, place a tea light or candle where desired and place it on top of the pumpkin. No burning hands and no playing! Or if you prefer to cut from above, choose a battery-powered tea light.

Being able to level your pumpkin is a game changer. We are never guaranteed a perfect pumpkin, especially if we leave it to the last minute when choosing a pumpkin.

Being able to level a pumpkin opens up options for pumpkin picking. You don’t have to fight for the “straightest” pumpkin, you can buy the cheapest pumpkins and if you’re late picking your pumpkin, it’s not the end of the world.

Are you someone who gets ahead of yourself when it comes to carving a pumpkin? You bring your pumpkin home, print out your favorite pumpkin template, and fit it inside your pumpkin only to find that when you cut the pumpkin lid, you cut off design space or you have to shrink your design.

Cutting off the top of the pumpkin can greatly reduce the space you have for carving. However, cutting out the bottom allows you to create a hole to clean the pumpkin, leaving it invisible to the eye and providing extra space.

Get creative with your lighting this year. Although candlelight is very natural and atmospheric, you should consider changing things up. There are so many options when it comes to wired lighting and you can still recreate the soft glow of a candle without worrying about burning it out.

So you’ve found your pumpkin and decided if you’re going to grow it or leave the tail. Now is the time to weed it out. It looks creepy, but it’s Halloween!

Pumpkin guts get everywhere, so it’s a good idea to leave newspaper, kitchen paper, or parchment paper and use that as a carving surface. Once you’ve gutted the pumpkin, you can easily pick up the surface and clean it, compost it, or use it in a recipe.

If you cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, you can easily use the stem to pull the lid off, but how do you pull off the bottom?

Once you get to the bottom, it’s easiest to cut a hole a little bigger than your fist, but small enough that you won’t see it when the pumpkin is sitting. Once you’ve cut out the circle, make a small triangular notch in the perimeter of the circle. This allows you to use your fingers or a tool to slide into the notch and gently move the bottom of the pumpkin.

Instead of scooping out the insides of the pumpkin one by one, use a large metal spoon to loosen the inside of the pumpkin. Scrape the inside of the pumpkin and scoop it out so that most of the inside comes out in one go.

After cleaning the inside, use a flat scraping tool to clean the walls of the gourd of loose and remaining debris. This pumpkin carving kit is perfect for all stages of pumpkin cleaning and carving, making the experience much more enjoyable.

I like to thin out the side of the pumpkin I plan to carve. This makes it much easier to figure out the finer details when the time comes.

Once you’re happy with the inside of your pumpkin, clean it with a mixture of bleach and water to help preserve the pumpkin and delay rotting.

I would also give the outside of the pumpkin a scrub with a vegetable brush and a clean with a damp cloth. Dry the pumpkin or let it air dry overnight.
