Traditionally, a log cabin starts with a red square in the middle of the blocks, but here I changed it to a green one. You can use any color, just make sure you have light and dark for the entire block.
Cut the 2 1/2″ green strips to make a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square. Do the same with the light strips. Sew them like this:
From both the light and dark (I used dark red) 2 1/2″ strips, cut 4 1/2″ and 6 1/2″ rectangles. From the dark 2 1/2″ strip only, cut 8 1/2″ rectangles ..
Arrange your pieces into a pile of each size, moving the top to the bottom occasionally. That way, identical blocks will not be visible.

Add a thicker 4 1/2″ piece to the 2 1/2″ unit made earlier. Let the first unit be oriented in the same direction throughout the entire block.
Press the seam and add a 4 1/2″ piece to the unit, keeping the darks on one side and the lights on the other.
This unfinished block measures 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. Once the blocks are stacked, start playing with the layout, as there are many ways to place these blocks.
