Even though we have GPS these days, it is still important for us to understand how our map grid system works. Map grids are quite simple; Young children can start by simply adding our 2 imaginary guide lines – the equator and the prime meridian. They are like the zero lines for the rest of our world’s grid.

Use the printable world map and stick a piece of tape on the equator. We used purple ribbon for the equator. If we were standing on the equator, we would not see any line. We put an imaginary line on our maps to represent the line that divides the world in two, exactly the same distance from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Next, we add a yellow ribbon, which is the main meridian. The prime meridian is a line we use to separate the eastern hemisphere from the western hemisphere. Again, an imaginary line used by cartographers.

Later, older students will also learn about other lines of latitude and longitude. After adding the strip equator and prime meridian, start giving the grid coordinates and have the children highlight each of the given latitude and longitude lines with colored markers and find the point where they intersect with their fingers.

Finally, to demonstrate their understanding of how latitude and longitude work, have each child find a location of their choice on the map and tell them what the latitude and longitude location is for that point. Then have everyone find the lines of latitude and longitude that correspond to where you live in the world. Mark that point on the map with a star.
