This song is also a great way to talk to children about the greatness of God’s love in sending His only Son for us.

The poem describes how the symbol of the stick and the colors of the candy bars are connected to the essence of the Christmas story.

You can even make a hole in the top left corner of each tag, thread a red or green ribbon through it, and attach it to a candy cane stick or hook.

Candy-shaped cookies can be added to a larger candy song story.

It can be attached to a stick and placed on a Candy Cane Mocha Bark and/or Candy Cane Blondie Bits plate.

Educational Ways To Focus On Jesus This Christmas

Marina is a grateful mother of two daughters and a son (16, 12 and 8) based in South Texas. Her husband is her best friend and biggest cheerleader. The family loves football, their cute rescue dog Jingle, good food and travel! My kids know Christmas is coming when I bring candy! They’re loved year-round, but real candy is special during the holiday season. It’s a big deal for us to strategically place them on the tree as we eat them during Advent and Christmas studies around the world. One of the things we learned was the history of Candy! If you’re unfamiliar with history, pull up a chair, grab a candy bar, and keep reading.

Sweets are often associated with Christmas and St. Nicholas Day. According to legend, in 1670, the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany decided to distribute candy canes to small children to keep them calm during Christmas. Because it was a special occasion at Christmas and to justify the giving of sweet treats to the children, the sticks were bent in the shape of shepherd’s crooks. These sweets eventually made their way to other parts of Europe. The candy cane recipe was finally published in 1844, and the candy is mentioned in literature as early as 1866.

In Worcester, Ohio, a German-Swedish immigrant used candy and paper ornaments to decorate his blue Christmas tree. Sound familiar? The red and white stripes were not added together with pepper (punishment) until the turn of the century.

Indiana is the home of this invention. A local candy maker wanted to come up with something to commemorate the birth of our Savior. Then she made our traditional Christmas candy box. He started the process with a pure white candy cane. White symbolizes the virgin birth of Jesus and reminds us of his sinless nature. The hardness of the candy reminds us of the firm foundation of the church and the steadfastness of God’s promises. The J shape represents the name of Jesus and the staff of the good shepherd. The candy maker then added three red stripes, representing Jesus’ suffering and blood shed on the cross. If the candy is broken, it represents the broken body of Christ for us.

The candy was first mentioned in a Christmas-related publication in 1874, and it wasn’t until 1882 that it was first hung on Christmas trees. Chicago, Illinois filed the first patent for candy making machines. The Bunte brothers, confectioners from Chicago, applied for a patent in the early 1920s.

I mentioned earlier that candy is also associated with Nicholas Day. These wonderful delicacies are said to represent the cross (bishop’s staff) of the Christian bishop, Saint Nicholas. To learn more about the legend of the Candy Man, I encourage you to read the story with your family.

Last Updated May 22, 2019 Last year for my New Year’s post, I shared some of my “intentional” hopes for 2014. Going back to the post, I definitely see areas of growth in Christ and definitely areas of intentional growth. However, I see areas where I can use it… It has become a tradition for me to use sticks to share the Christmas story. I use a giant candy bar to teach the story and then give the kids two packets (one for them and one to share) (this surprises the kids). Packages include a candy hand card and a large Brach branded pepper stick.

I wanted a card with kid friendly prints that I could print on 4 pages. Also, I adjusted the song a bit so that non-church kids would understand the meaning. You will still have to explain

. Tell the children how to accept Jesus as their good Shepherd and Savior! If you don’t know how to explain the gospel to your child, contact me and I will post a blog or make a video to help you!

With the hustle and bustle of decorating, cooking, shopping and entertaining, it’s easy to forget the true meaning of Christmas. We try to find that “perfect” gift, but the reality is that we can’t give anyone the “perfect” gift. This gift was given to each of us through the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ.

A candy legend is just that, a legend. I don’t know who wrote the story but there is a great meaning behind it. Below you will find two free printables, thanks Tracy! A candy story would look great in a frame. Print it out for the poem, then glue, tape, or punch two holes in it to insert the candy cane. This would make a great holiday gift.
