Printable Behavior Clip Chart – My first kids officially have the dreaded spring fever! Almost as soon as we got back from vacation, I knew we needed a change, something new and fun to keep everyone motivated.
I’m usually a go-kart, but I decided there was too much focus on negative behavior and not enough on good behavior. I’ve always wanted to try a scrapbooking diagram, but was afraid I wouldn’t be able to stick with it. After talking to my friends on Facebook and doing a little research, I realized I could! It’s done in a bright chevron…my favorite! This chart has seven levels. Everyone starts at Ready to Learn, and children can move up and down the ladder throughout the day. Super Student is at the top of the table, and contact with parents is at the bottom!

I really want to encourage my kids to reach the top of the leaderboard so that every time a student reaches the Super Student level, they get a gem from their clip. Once five gems are earned, the clips are “retired” to the Hall of Fame. A new clip will be released and the party will begin again!
And for even more motivation…I award tickets to students who finish the day in the green or somewhere above the scale.
This is my ticket scale: green = 1; blue = 2; purple = 3; Pink = 4. On Fridays we count our tickets and visit our prize collectors and binders to buy goodies!
I went to Staples to buy something else and ran across them on sale…awesome! And they are in my classroom colors! To keep the bags clean and in one piece, I put them in bins.

Let me start by saying that there is no one system that works for every teacher or every group of students. You will find that each group of students is unique in what they need to perform successfully in the classroom. That’s why it’s important to have a set of strategies and tools to manage behavior. After reading this post, you might decide to add behavioral snippets to your toolkit!
Truth be told, I have found that with clear instructions and consistency, your classroom takes care of itself and your students meet the behavioral expectations you have set for them. However, it is important to have some sort of behavior management system in place.
One year I had the most talkative class I have ever encountered. They were wonderful children, but oh my, they can talk! At some point in late September, when they were still talking about me and not listening to instructions, it became clear that I needed to try something new because (as I mentioned) you will find that what works for one class may not work for another .

I decided to find something new and that’s when I discovered the classroom behavior chart. At first I resisted because of its size. But when all else failed, I decided to keep an open mind. I made my first scrapbook diagram over the weekend, bought a pack of clothespins and hung it up in my classroom.
On Monday morning, when my students arrived, I presented them with a classroom behavior chart. Oh my word. It was like a switch was flipped and their behavior momentarily improved. More on shot diagrams below!
A clip chart is a vertical display that is divided into sections. Each student’s name is written on a push pin and all students start the day in the middle of the chart. This section is often labeled as “ready to learn.” Their choices throughout the day determine what happens to their clip. Teachers ask students to “film” students who are exhibiting positive behavior. They move their recording to the next session in hopes of getting to the “top of the charts”. Teachers can ask students to “count down” based on decisions they make in class. In any class, you’re going to have your talkers and your thugs and you’re going to have your good little boys. The classroom behavior chart will make the doobies work for you. They become your allies and they love it.
Each student has a clothespin and everyone starts the day in the middle of the table on Ready to Learn. Clothespins move throughout the day. Positive choices allow them to go one level higher each time. If the student makes a negative decision, the teacher rejects it. There is a buffer zone between being “ready to learn” and facing any form of consequence so that if a child falls “down” they can bounce back.
In this system, teachers positively recognize students who complete the task. When the room fills up a bit, I don’t focus on the chat. I see students making good decisions and showing appreciation for their role model’s behavior. They connect. They radiate. The others were quickly redirected without me even having to point to their chat. He keeps everything very positive and upbeat.
Even when a student makes a not-so-good choice, they can pick themselves up and move forward again. As a helpful tip, I usually try to “sharpen” my friends who tend to get “key” early in the morning so they have some wiggle room.

Making clip art diagrams is very simple. It’s a very simple system. There are no prize baskets or jewelry or tickets or tokens or jewelry to manage or track. Instead of striving for useless junk, children strive to achieve recognition for their good behavior.
