I have many thoughts about how I would teach/do things if life were perfect. And by ideal, I mean I could stop at any moment and get 100% on my to-do list.
I’m sure I don’t know what it’s like to get ahead of your to-do list. I still have things on my list that I put there when I moved to Drumwright in July 2012.
It is now October 2014. I don’t think subscribing to the local newspaper is high on my list of priorities…

When I teach simplifying radicals, I teach my students to find their prime factor first.
Elementary factoring is something they need to know in my classroom, but I find that many of my students need a quick refresher course on primes and composites.
I usually accomplish this by asking my students to classify numbers from 1 to 100 as prime, composite, or not. We make a small table to hold our interactive notebooks.
As students work on factoring prime factors, I encourage them to put away their notebooks and turn to this page. However, you know how it is.
Preped Exam Preparation
Students soon get to the point where they assume that the random number is prime instead of checking their table.
Three years ago I thought of making a poster of prime numbers to hang on the wall. This has never happened. He taught the radicals again. And I vowed to cry again.
One day I cut out colored paper and gave each student a prime number. They had to decorate their paper with their initial number. Then I laminated them and hung them.
Silly me, I didn’t think to tell students how to orient their papers before writing. Oh…

This year I decided to make this poster with original numbers. But I had a dilemma. The walls of my classroom are literally covered with posters. Where can you hang the main numbers?
In the end I decided that I needed to use a small 4 inch gap between the bulletin board and the edge of the wall.
I made a quick template in Microsoft Publisher that is 3 inches wide. It didn’t take long to copy the page and enter the key figures in a nice font. It was done and printed in 7 minutes.
I had one of my student assistants print it on cardstock, laminate it, cut it out, and stick it on the wall.
Prime Numbers Poster
The verdict? Success. Students actually use the poster while working on their assignments or tests! And this makes the math teacher very happy.
Did the owner of this notebook give permission to return 23 with initials? Since one of them was left out, what method would you use to classify the numbers in the 10×10 prime/complex numbers table? I think using the Sieve of Eratosthenes and the 6×20 grid is pretty neat. The table clearly places all 2’s and 3’s on vertical bars and all 5’s and 7’s on 45-degree diagonals, so marking composites using the sieve method can be done quickly and safely by marking in straight lines. (that is, do not leave undefined parts of the label in other cells). Since these rows represent multiples of all primes less than 11, all combinations less than 11**2 are marked and so 20 rows are selected.
I have a request. Can you move the camera a little to the left and take a picture of the billboard to the left of your initial number strip above the counter pockets? I think I would like to shamelessly steal your ideas. And while you’re taking pictures, can you give me a close-up of the bulletin board to the left of your SmartBoard? 🙂
I’ve been teaching longer—in fact, longer than you’ve been alive. I also teach in a small country school (even smaller than yours, if you can believe it). But my journey started in Oklahoma at OBU and >= there are hundreds of things that make me think we are soul mates! I really want to see…
