Powerpoint Fire Animation – A small fire broke out in the sulfur reduction unit at the Syncrude oil sands plant in northern Alberta on Monday morning and was extinguished within two hours, with no workers injured, a Syncrude spokesman said.

Spokesman Lithan Slade said it was too early to say whether the unit was being assessed for damage and whether it would affect Syncrude’s production. He said the fire was caused by a “process malfunction” at Terminal 29-1.

Monday’s fire, which started just before 9 a.m. local time and was extinguished by 10:21 a.m., follows a larger fire at Syncrude’s Mildred Lake in March that temporarily halted production at the 350,000-barrel-per-day project.

Syncrude, majority-owned by Suncor Energy, is in the process of ramping up standby power to full capacity after the March fire, offering scheduled maintenance to the company.

The project last week cut its forecast for July synthetic crude output by 1.1 million barrels to 8.4 million barrels, three trading sources said.

After settling 80 cents a barrel above WTI on Friday, light synthetic crude for August delivery traded 60 barrel lower than West Texas Intermediate, according to Shorkan Energy Brokers.
