I love giving kids the opportunity to create and create in different shapes.Whether it’s on the table, mixed with other blocks, or just having time to explore shapes is invaluable.
Once you have enough time to explore the pattern blocks, you can introduce printable pattern blocks. These symmetrically patterned rugs are attractive and fun to make together.
Small Pattern Block Set #1
Pattern blocks are a great way to have fun learning different math skills. A fun activity for math centers, morning jobs, or small groups of early graduates. I also saw it being used in the morning. All you need is a pattern block and a set of pattern block cards. Easy to set up and get started.
Magnetic pattern blocks are also a great way to use printable mats. Print a simple mat and place it on a cookie sheet or magnetic easel. Place the magnetic pattern block on the bottom or side of the mat. Then cover the mat block with a pattern. This is perfect for quiet time activities and car travel activities.
I love that these mats are symmetrical. Children are naturally drawn to symmetrical things around them and love creating these designs as well. This activity pack contains 10 mats that you can download and print for free.
Whether you’re looking for animals, a specific season, or a specific theme, you’ll love these free printables!

Thanks for this! The link seems to be broken, but I was able to find a block mat pattern on the kinders site. We already have the Patternables book, but many of the pages are too difficult for my child, her nearly 3 year old. Many baby rugs seem simple enough for my little one—more difficult would be fun for a 6-year-old. Again, thanks for the nice and easy idea!
I noticed you commented on some blogs that I still comment on.
I found you from the link you posted on 1+1+1=1. And I can just say…awesome! I will read it regularly from now on. Thanks for all the great ideas. Pattern blocks are a popular math operation and seem to have been around forever (at least they were around when I started teaching math 25 years ago). The standard set includes:

There are many fun learning activities you can do with Pattern Blocks, including exploring symmetry, fractions, tessellation, angles, and more. Pattern blocks can be used for things other than math, such as creativity, art, and writing.
One option is to use a digital format block. While nothing beats working with plastic cubes in real life, students can do many activities in the virtual version as well.
To help with this, I’ve created a free Google Drawings template with virtual shape blocks. In addition to the blank template, I’ve also created some sample activities to give you some ideas on how to use them. See below for more information and get your own copy of all these resources.
A basic block pattern template is a Google Drawing with a blank canvas and one of each pattern block to the left of the canvas. Each of the six block pattern shapes and colors are accurately reproduced in the template. Pattern blocks can be copied, pasted, moved, rotated and flipped to suit your learning activity.

Basic block templates can be used to create all kinds of learning activities. As an example, I have created some activities as shown below. Each activity also includes a template that you can copy and use as needed.
Pattern blocks are tools that can be used for many creative and learning activities. A quick Google search will find many activities using physical pattern blocks that can be easily applied to this Google Drawings virtual template. Or you can create your own project. If so, please share how you use this template to engage your students in their learning.

I recently created these snowflake-style blog templates as part of a new “school” system I plan to do at Smiley Man. Smiley Man is still young (20 months), so I don’t think he can use a “normal” block model. But he loves playing with pattern blocks and likes to have a template for arranging the pieces.

We made these templates specifically for the Smiley Man, but they also make great Prec for his activities. Little Bears love to work with block models and most preschoolers love to do the same.I decided I should let my little bear try them out.
I taught my little bear that every snowflake is unique. I showed them all in the shape of snowflakes, but they all looked different. He was fascinated.
The little bear liked these snowflake his templates so much that he decided to do some extension activities with them. First, I had him create one of the snowflakes in the template by looking at the template and placing the pieces on the table, rather than directly on the pattern block template.
After that I made him follow all personal things. I instructed him to create his own template for pattern blocks. he thought it was really cool.

Next, I asked him to make his own snowflake. He talked about how to get 6 points. The little bear was very excited about this and enjoyed making his own snowskates.
He traced it all back when he made his favorite snowflake
