Paper Doll Ballerina Cut Out – So, one of my first jobs while in library school was to help digitize a huge collection of costume design sketches from a group called the Motley Group (not to be confused with Motley Crue). This eventually allowed me to complete my library studies and major in theater history with an emphasis on the history of technical design.
All branches of theater design are concerned with the smooth delivery of information to the audience. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, it is customary to dress the warring families in different colors. Romeo’s family may be red, orange, and yellow, while Juliet’s family may be green, blue, and purple. This is useful because it immediately communicates to the audience which group they relate to – important in a play with around 20 characters. Opera and ballet also have costume traditions. In a medium where people don’t speak and plots are often very weird, identifying characters by their colors and style is more important.

So, when I was choosing colors and costume designs for my paper dolls ballerinas, I was well aware that there were traditions I needed to pay attention to. I tried my best to keep these costumes fairly “traditional” except for the firebird. I didn’t like tutus or unitards, they looked plain, so I went a little more modern.

Working from left to right, the first costume is from the ballet Coppelia, a folk-style costume commonly used in the first act of the ballet Giselle, or any ballet involving milk fairs and/or county fairs. Next up is the Nutcracker’s Waltz of the Flowers costume. This is a costume I totally invented when I didn’t like any of the versions I saw online. For my firebird, I chose a more modern costume instead of the traditional tutu. If I was going to dress up anything in a tutu, Firebird seemed like the logical choice. Monica dances the part of Odette in Swan Lake – next week’s paper doll Mia Odile gets a costume. It is traditional to dance with the same dancer, but I like to split the costumes into two sets. For Swan Lake I chose a traditional costume with some feather details and a headpiece. Monica dances the part of the Lilac Fairy from Sleeping Beauty. Obviously her costume was purple.

Mia’s costumes are (left to right) Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, Scheherazade and Romeo and Juliet. I think Monica got better ballets because most people have heard of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker but not Scheherazade even though it’s a wonderful piece of music.
When I first created my list of ballets to paint for these paper doll kits, I wanted to show a selection of ballet costumes that didn’t go beyond the tutu. Romeo and Juliet is often dressed in a Renaissance-inspired style, and Scheherazade in the Middle East is often done as an Orientalist fantasy. So, my two nods to the “non-tutu” look of these paper dolls. Not every dance costume is a tutu.
Mia also has a casual outfit – a simple skirt, leg warmers, a long-sleeved leotard, a tunic top and flat-soled dance shoes. Of course, he can share his practice clothes with Monica, and I think there’s a lot of potential between the two of them. I honestly didn’t want to spend too much time on practice clothes. Drawing is not as fun as a fancy tutu.

Monica’s set also has some mix and match options. For example, Monica Coppelia’s tutu works in Giselle’s first act before Giselle dies. I’m especially happy with how the whole overlay on Mia Gisele’s tutu actually turned out.
I spent a lot of time looking at the work of Charles Ventura and Pat Stahl, both of whom had a mastery of black and white linework that I could only dream of one day achieving. I’ve been collecting her work along with other black and white paper doll artists on my Black and White Paper Doll Pinterest board for a while now.
Learning the techniques of artists you admire is a great way to learn to try new things.
Does anyone know if Charles Ventura or Pat Stall is still alive? I really feel like I should write to them and tell them how much I love their paper dolls.

Please read my Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before printing any of my paper dolls. thank you For years I avoided painting a ballerina paper doll. I was asked a lot, but I always shied away.
Mainly the thought of drawing tutus scared me. I work with ink. Ink is great for a lot of things, but I’ve always struggled with sheerness, and tulle (the stuff they make the tutus out of) is known for both sheerness and texture. That alone was enough to scare me.
Then, on that fateful day last year, I had no choice. I had to draw a tassel for the winner of the contest. I hated the result of my first tutu attempt, but vowed to return to tutus.
As I was learning (and still learning) how to draw tutus, I had to learn to let go of my natural instinct for controlled line work. I had to accept the risk of messy line work. It’s been a struggle and while my tutus aren’t perfect yet, they’re getting better.

So I chose to make some classic ballets that I love for my ballet costumes. Characters include Swanhilda from Coppelia (or Giselle before she dies), Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, Odette from Swan Lake (it could be Odile if you paint it black), Spruce from Firebird and the Lilac Fairy from Sleeping. the beauty I chose Monica for this set because I thought of Misty Copeland and I had only seen one African American ballerina paper doll before. This is one of the puppets from Dover’s book – Ballet Dancers. So, here is another African-American ballerina paper doll. They will be in color next week.
