Paper cutting has a long and colorful history, originating in China where the first art of paper cutting discovered dates back to around the 6th century! Things have come a long way since then, but the principles remain the same. It has been described as a very conscious process and once you find your rhythm it will be very therapeutic. Having said that, it may take some practice and probably a lot of torn paper before you can get into really detailed paper cutting, but the results are well worth the practice and time.
If you are new to this craft it can be very helpful to start with a paper cutting template rather than trying to go freehand, it gives you some guidance and there are some very creative templates available. Paper cutting is a traditional method of hand cutting a design into a single sheet of paper, originating in China. Since its inception, it has moved around the world and adapted to a wide variety of cultural styles. The design possibilities are endless for paper cutting, from simple patterns to large and intricate pieces.
If you want to buy everything at once, check out this Paper Cutting Starter Kit on Etsy, which has everything you need to get started, plus some great templates. If you like the look of paper cutting but don’t want to do it by hand, consider investing in a digital cutting machine like a Scan N Cut or Cricut machine with our guide.
As mentioned for beginners, it is helpful to use a template when starting out. When you start cutting, it’s always best to start from the center of a design and work your way outwards, avoiding jumping around the design as this can weaken the paper. Start cutting the design slowly, making sure to move the pieces you’ve cut to one side – cutting them below the design can damage your blade. There are two main types of paper cutting:
Positive cuts – i.e. cutting the space around the design (outside cuts). Look at design #1 on the list as an example.

Negative cuts – which means cutting the design itself from the paper (the inside lines) – look at design number 3 on the list as an example.
There are many things you can do with your designs once they are complete, they often look great just mounted and framed on contrasting card. You can also create greeting cards from them, in particular, they are suitable for wedding invitations or greeting cards due to their often floral and delicate designs.
