Owl Pumpkin – Halloween just isn’t the same without pumpkins. Sure, costumes, candy and scary movies are some of our favorite things, but pumpkin carving is one tradition we can’t get enough of. It’s a great opportunity to be creative. Try some of our favorite creative ideas this year.
If you are looking for a beautiful design that is good for the whole season, the owl is the perfect choice. Cutting freehand can be a bit tricky, but stencils make it easy.

It’s also easy to make with tools you already have in your kitchen. All you need is a serrated knife (adults only, please!), newspaper, printed stencils, masking tape, a large spoon, nails, and a candle or tea light. Here’s how to carve your own owl pumpkin.

Halloween Owl/pumpkin Salt & Pepper Set Owl 3” X 3” Pumpkin 3” X 3”
Pumpkin, choose the shape that will make the owl look good. (This is my harvest for the year!)
Cut the lid of your pumpkin with a sharp kitchen knife, keeping the knife at a 45 degree angle, to make the lid sit in place properly.
I’m using an owl template that I use for my silk painting designs and thought it would be fun to see it translated to pumpkins.
You can try to find it with a pumpkin, but it’s better to draw it freehand.
Best Printable Owl Pumpkin Carving Stencils
I played with a pencil first to sketch the owl and when I was happy with the shape and size of the design, I used a pen to make the lines clearer to draw from.
First, I used an apple cutter and made 2 holes all the way through the pumpkin, which made it the perfect size for the center of the eye.
Then I use a small scalpel knife to cut into the skin of the pumpkin, removing the orange layer but not going through it.
As I started with the small piece of leather, I carefully cut out the scale as part of the middle.

The pressure of the light and the knife gave a good starting pattern that I carved into it, revealing different shades.
I then worked a larger wing onto the wing, cutting each wing in half lengthwise to reveal 2 more shades.
I finally decided that more light would be needed to create a narrow strip of skin in the feather wing area.

Beautiful. My grandson and I paint elaborate pumpkins every Halloween and we both love nature so this owl design was perfect. I’ll post a picture when I make it.

I’ve been wanting to try this for a while and I have to say, although it was a bit complicated to make the carved jack-o-lantern, it was a blast!
Of course, the first step is to pick the perfect pumpkin from the pumpkin patch or store. I couldn’t pick one that was big and round and had a big stem. Next year, I’m looking at the large gourd variety.
No Carve Owl Pumpkin For Halloween
Since we made a wood owl Halloween costume, I chose to draw a wood owl pattern for her to carve. Check out the download if you want to try this method!
