Ideally, number lines contain only small numbers, no more than 20. This is because a number line is usually only used to teach young children learning even numbers. The other reason is that solving a math problem with large numbers using the number line is inefficient. For example, if you need to subtract 78-63, counting one by one will be a long journey. It is also impractical to draw the line. You need a very long paper. Paper at least 1 meter long. Or you need to stick some paper in one. Too much work. But that’s ok. You can still use the number line up to 100 if you want to challenge yourself.
Although using a number table makes more sense, you can still use the number line to count. The principle is the same. Move right to add and left to subtract. You can mark every few counts, say every ten, so you don’t lose track of your counts. You can also use it to compare numbers.
If you can. A number line is very useful for solving basic math problems involving negative numbers. For example, if you want to solve -5+3, children are more likely to add the number and get -8 as the answer. By using the number line, you can easily teach them how to do it
