Happy Monday friends! Basil, a first class hipster, has been wearing ties for years. And around the same time I was buying him those bow ties. Ok, so the cost isn’t that much each time, 1 bow tie retails for around $10-$20, but those costs really add up over time. So after buying Basil’s 20th butterfly (crazy, I know!) I thought I might as well make them, and I did.

Below you will find my easy DIY No Sew bow tie tutorial. I hope it works for you and your dog can look like a gentleman without breaking the bank. Step 1: There are a few things you’ll need.

Diy No Sew Bow Ties For Pets!

The great thing about this project is that most people already have many of these craft supplies in their home. If you need anything on this list, you can find it at your local craft store. I highly recommend using double sided Velcro and it’s hard to find. I ordered mine online (http://www.etsy.com) mostly. I also use a regular high quality glue gun. For my fabric, I found an amazing deal in Hobby Lobby’s fabric scrap bin. It was 1/8th of a yard and only .59 cents. Also, I couldn’t get past Elvis in the 50’s pattern.

The size I chose was about 6 inches by 6 inches. This bow tie would be a little big for a medium sized (20lb) dog, but just the way I like it. If you want a smaller tie, make the square smaller.

I cut a 2×6 inch piece of fabric. Make sure the length is 3 times the width. I turned the fabric over and pinned the edges down like I did with the first fabric.

Press the large square you created, starting at the back, to make the bow tie shape that will look best on you. When I did that, Elvis’ face got a little weird.

Make sure the fabric is on the front. Knot the fabric at the back and attach the flaps at the bottom. This is also a good time to tape up anything that doesn’t look good.

I took one of Basil’s everyday dog ​​collars and put double sided velcro on top to see how much I needed. For a 1 inch collar, I recommend at least 2 inches of Velcro.

I cut the Velcro and attached the ribbon in the center behind the butterfly. Be sure to place the adhesive on the soft side of the Velcro. This way the Velcro teeth can grip the collar and the other side of the line. If you choose to use elastic, you can attach a loop of elastic band in the same place.

Wrap the Velcro around the collar in the desired position. Consider how the collar will hang and sit right on your pet.

While I was making dog straps for my non-reusable shirt, I couldn’t resist using the extra material to make a bow. Bows and/or bow ties are a quick craft, although attaching them to dog collars can sometimes be a little tricky. We’ve got some amazing bow tie and bandana designs (including what might be my favorite cycle so far), but to sew this bow project completely right now, we’re going to show you some easy ways and attachment options. Let’s head to the craft room for some fun sewing!

The steps below are similar to sewing a simple dog tie, but the material is secured in place with fusible webbing instead of sewing the folded body of the bowtie. No sewing required. It’s simple, but still decently strong.

For sturdier fabrics, you can skip the interfacing. Most hardware is flimsy with little help. If you are using a small soft interfacing, you can cut it to fit the entire size of the fabric. If you are using a solid interface, you can install it at compile time.

Minute No Sew Ribbon Bows

If you sew, ironing is optional, but recommended. Since we’re using fusible tape instead of sewing these DIY no-sew dog ties and bows, you’ll need a heat sealer. Preferably something that also holds the crease well. It makes it much easier when you prepare the wrapper for assembly.

There are two different examples in the DIY no-sew details below. Another simulates the common loops of a tied bow. The other is a flat (no loop) bent bow. While simulating the folded strips of a real bow is my default for making a bow tie, flat folded ties can look great too. They use small items that can be useful when using small scraps or hiding places. Flat styles also take less effort to assemble than sewing. But if you’re looking for something similar, rings are my DIY no-sew dog tie suggestions.

I chose to make this bow a bit longer than a regular bow just to give it a different look like bow vs. tie. It has a triple-pronounced accordion bow instead of the usual butterfly-like central fold. You can easily adjust the dimensions to suit your preferred size and style of bow. Unlike our other bow ties, the bow itself is the star here, not the fabric or face design.

Alternatively, you can create your own butterfly or butterfly so that the folded items don’t meet at the top/bottom edges, leaving bow-like loops. This is a typical bow shape. You can do it the same size as a plain tie, but it works best with a little extra material and added coverage so that all the raw ends are hidden, even if you look inside the loops. For a clean finish, instead of curling the top edges, a bow can be created by using a large piece of material and joining the top/bottom folds until they meet as a finished overlap, as shown here.

Doggie Bow Tie

If desired, you can make a seamless loop in the middle by layering (folding like a double crochet) the width/length of fabric you’d like to go around the loop and joining (or joining) into the loop.

I folded my slide material like a tie, then unfolded it to create a loop first, using a cut stitch-like loop that is replaced with a hem instead of a stitch. Dummy seams are ironed into the garment and taped together before joining. You can see the cut seam in our DIY drawstring bag post. Easy to sew. Not so easy with fusible tape. Once connected, I again carefully fold the edges of the ring inward, then repeat on the center line to turn the connection and connect it in place. Definitely not an easy road. But the finished slide is solid (would be a problem without the stitched slides as noted below) and has no visible blue edges.

As mentioned in our post on sewing dog bowties, simple loop slips through the neck can be used to attach the bowtie to the collar, but only if the collar and the slide match. As with a seamless collar attachment, fabric slides can be very difficult. There is often a lot of pressure on the slide seam that holds the bow and works on the collar stub buckets. Our current collars have wide straps, large loops and are equipped with markers and tracks, which are not very suitable for slides unless they are very elastic. Here are a few ways to fasten a seamless collar.

As mentioned above, you can create a seamless loop slide using fusible tape or fabric glue to create the loop. You can do this with folded fabric, duct tape, or any other material that suits your style. No-sew column slides can be constructed with Velcro fasteners or (if you have the tools) press fasteners to create an open/closed loop instead.
