Michigan’s primary interstate highways connect its major cities and facilitate travel between Michigan and its neighbors. I-69 curves around southeastern Michigan, between the Ontario border and the Indiana border. I-75 crosses eastern Michigan from north to south, while I-94 crosses southern Michigan from east to west. I-96 connects the cities of Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids.

Interstate highways in Michigan serve the state’s metropolitan areas. I-194 connects Battle Creek to I-94. I-196 connects I-96 in Grand Rapids with I-94 near Benton Harbor. I-275 connects I-75 to the western suburbs of Detroit. I-375 is a short freeway that provides easy access to downtown Detroit. I-475 provides convenient access to downtown Flint from I-75 and I-69. I-496 connects downtown Lansing with I-96. I-675 connects downtown Saginaw with I-75. I-696 serves the northern suburbs of Detroit.

Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula are connected by the towering Mackinac Bridge. One way to enjoy some of the fun the state has to offer is to make the 320-mile journey from the fishing port of Ludington on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan to Mackinaw City. Travelers will enjoy uninterrupted coastal views from the Point Betsy Lighthouse and the 71,000-acre Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Nature Reserve. At Little Traverse Bay, this winding road meets an enclave known as the Tunnel of Trees, as well as Wilderness State Park, which offers plenty of hunting, fishing, hiking and water sports. This exhibit explores how roads have been depicted on Michigan maps since it was a territory. In addition to maps, it contains photographs, a unique guide to short life journeys and artifacts. The map evolved in stages along with the road system, showing advances such as named roads being replaced over time by numbered state and federal routes. Publishers include map giants Rand McNally and Gousa, which also supply oil companies with their ubiquitous freely distributed road maps.

Early issued maps of the state, such as this 1846 Mitchell map, continued to reflect the expanding road network in southern lower Michigan, including proposed railroads and canals. The burden of road construction and improvement fell on local governments, so that relatively little attention was paid to long-distance communications between cities. In this early period, travel by stage was still common, but the roads were in a deplorable state, and travel on them was a risky enterprise as well as a severe test of endurance for the individuals involved.

With the rise and expansion of railroads in the mid-1800s, the use of roads for long-distance travel in Michigan was greatly reduced. Travel by horse, buggy and wagon was generally limited to local areas and the condition of the roads between towns gradually deteriorated. Not surprisingly, maps of this period focused on railway lines, if at all, on roads. Most mid- to late-19th-century cartography, such as the Rand McNally 1881 map illustrated here, was strictly geopolitical, showing important natural resources and political boundaries. Maps, even detailed ones, recognized only the road system and favored railways.

During the 1890s, the bicycle emerged as a popular mode of travel. This increased interest in road travel, road improvements and road maps. The League of American Cyclists lobbied for road improvements and produced books and maps describing road conditions. These maps included topography and water features, important features for cyclists. Later road maps, which focused on the interests of automobile drivers, tended to underestimate these features.
