For many San Diegans, check out the Old Globe’s “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” music is always a holiday tradition.
But although the story will not change, the regulars of “Grinch” know that every year, James Vásquez hires a new director and makes some tweaks in his work to continue the show.
I’ve seen the show for almost 20 of its 24 years and one of the best changes to come in a decade is the casting of Andrew Polec this year in the title role. His big eyes, fit body, boyish smile, mischievous laugh, boundless energy and solid voice acting are like a cartoon in life.

And not just any photo shoot. Polec, who first met Globe fans last summer as the star of “Hair,” grew up watching the 1966 animated version of Dr. Seuss story, remembered by horror star Boris Karloff. Polec’s soulful, joyful and multi-octave vocal performance gives a subtle nod to Karloff. But he took the style in a new direction with the screams, howls and combination of high falsetto notes that he honed during his four years as a star of British and American production in the rock ‘n’ roll song “Bat Out of Hell. .”
Polec also throws in unexpected pirouettes, yoga poses and stock shakes to make him the goofiest Grinch I can remember. At the age of 32, he was the youngest person to play the part at the Globe, so he connected well with the children in the audience and got the famous number ‘One of a Kind’ without the breath If the previous Grinches gave 110 percent to every task, Polec gave 200.
Also featured in the show is the wonderful Tommy Martinez as the young Grinch dog, Max, and John Treacy Egan’s heartwarming Old Max, who narrates the 80-minute show. Bets Malone and Larry Raben are also fun as the creepiest Whos in Whoville, Grandma and Grandpa Who, and the poised Leila Manuel, who shares the role of Cindy-Lou Who with Sophia Adajar in the scenes . Music director Elan McMahan returns to the pit to lead the crowd through Mel Marvin’s musical score, which was expanded at the Globe a few years ago with two songs from the 1966 film, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Fah Who Doraze.”
Every year, the musical “Grinch” delights children with its natural scenes and costumes and snow on the tracks. But this year, the new Grinch in town had moms and dads in the crowd surprised and laughing out loud.

My three year old son Kip loves Mr. Grinch and decided to be Mr. Grinch. Grinch for Halloween. I searched online for ideas and decided to start sewing. I ordered a long faux fur coat, bought a pattern so I could make the body, and sold Max the dog on Ebay. After a lot of alterations and sewing, my house looks like the Grinch has lost its entire winter coat, but the coat is coming together. I made a belly stuffed with stuffed animals and a pillowcase, the hat is in our Christmas decorations and has Grinch dialogue. I dyed his hair green, painted his face and here we are Mr. Grinch.
