Map Of The World Showing New Zealand
New Zealand, Maori Aotearoa, island country in the South Pacific, the southwestern part of Polynesia. New Zealand is a remote country, one of the last major areas that can be inhabited and settled, and lies more than 1,600km south-east of Australia, its nearest neighbour. The country consists of two main islands, the North and South Islands, and several smaller islands, a few hundred kilometers from the main group. The capital is Wellington and the largest metropolitan area is Auckland; both are located on the North Island. New Zealand administers the Tokelau archipelago in the South Pacific and claims part of the Antarctic continent. Niue and the Cook Islands are self-governing states in free association with New Zealand.
New Zealand Is Tired Of Being Left Off World Maps—including Its Own Government’s
New Zealand is a land of great contrasts and diversity. Active volcanoes, spectacular caves, deep glacial lakes, verdant valleys, stunning fjords, long sandy beaches and the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana in the South Island all contribute to New Zealand’s scenic beauty. New Zealand also has a unique diversity of plant and animal life, much of which has evolved during the country’s continued isolation. For example, it is the only home to the long-snouted, flightless kiwi, the ubiquitous nickname of New Zealanders.
New Zealand was the largest country in Polynesia when Great Britain annexed it in 1840. Thereafter it was successively a crown colony, a self-governing colony (1856) and a lordship (1907). During the 1920s it controlled almost all of its internal and external policies, although it did not achieve full independence until 1947, when it approved the Westminster Charter. It is a member of the Commonwealth.
New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Mount Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 was one of the defining moments of the 20th century. “In a way,” said Hillary, “I think I represent the average New Zealander: I have modest abilities, I combine them with a good dose of determination and I like to succeed.”
Despite New Zealand’s isolation, the country has been heavily involved in international affairs since the early 20th century and is an active member of various intergovernmental institutions, including the United Nations. It has also participated in several wars, including World War I and World War II. Economically, the country depended on the export of agricultural products, especially to Great Britain. However, Britain’s accession to the European Community in the early 1970s forced New Zealand to expand its trade relations with other countries. It also began to develop a much larger and more diverse industrial sector. Tourism is playing an increasingly important role in the economy, although this sector is vulnerable to global financial instability.

The social and cultural divide between the two main groups in New Zealand, the indigenous Maori of Polynesian origin and the colonizers and later immigrants from the British Isles and their descendants, has narrowed since the 1970s, although educational and economic differences between the two groups persist. Immigration from other areas, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, have also left their mark, and New Zealand culture today reflects all these influences. Minority rights and race-related issues continue to feature prominently in New Zealand politics.
New Zealand is approximately 1,600 km long (north-south) and approximately 450 km wide at its widest point. The country is slightly smaller in area than the US state of Colorado and slightly larger than the United Kingdom. About two thirds of the country is economically usable, the rest is mountainous. Due to its numerous ports and fjords, the country has an extremely long coastline in relation to its area. Just over 2,000 miles from Australia is a group of islands with distinctive shapes. The northern one is shaped like a lamb chop, the southern one like an elaborate mashed potato, stretching southwest to the Tasman Sea. There are about 600 others, ranging from small patches of rock to life-supporting land masses that are two-thirds the size of Rhode Island. These islands are known as New Zealand. Maybe you already knew this: many card manufacturers in the world don’t seem to do this.
This is New Zealand’s complaint. It’s certainly not a huge country, neither Canada nor China, but it’s not that small either. At around 100,000 square miles, it is similar in size to the witch-shaped British Isles, which is sure to appear on the world map. If it were a US state, it would have the ninth largest land area in the country, lying between Colorado and Wyoming. However, for whatever reason, it keeps getting wiped off the map and New Zealanders aren’t happy about it.

Pyongyang International Airport. (In fact, the site’s curators say there could be benefits if North Korea forgets New Zealand exists.) Hell, even the New Zealand government has occasionally gone off the map.
This collection and an accompanying subreddit with 40,500 subscribers have a kind of masochistic delight. New Zealanders don’t take themselves too seriously: if the rest of the world goes one step further and forgets about them entirely, well, it could be worse.
Now New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is joining in on the fun. In a new tourism campaign using the hashtag #getnzonthemap, a video shows Conchords comedian Rhys Darby calling out Ardern in a panic over mapping omissions. Is it a conspiracy, he wonders, or has he simply forgotten about New Zealand? “Maybe people just let us down and think we’re a mistake?” she muses.

Aotearoa Gets Left Off World Maps
Most world maps use the Mercator projection. This 16th century projection places New Zealand in the bottom right corner of the world and puts Europe in the middle. But the projection has its drawbacks: Greenland, which is about a third the size of Australia, appears gigantic, while Alaska and Brazil appear comparable in size. In fact, the South American country is five times bigger. New Zealand’s location in the inland Pacific makes it easy to mistake it for a mindless crop.
But there is no particular reason to position it that way. New Zealand might as well be the center of the world while everything else revolves around it. And indeed, in New Zealand schools, this is often the case. On posters hung on classroom walls, the Mercator projection is often adjusted to place Middle-earth at the actual center of the earth, making it much, much harder to accidentally clip it.
