Westward expansion heightened tensions between those who supported and opposed slavery, notably the admission of Kansas and Nebraska as U.S. territories.

While the Nebraska Territory was too far north for slavery to be profitable, so slavery was never seriously discussed there, whether Kansas was a free or slave state was always the source of great conflict. Kansas was north of the Missouri Compromise Line—Missouri’s southern border—and so was supposed to be a free state under the 1820 legislation. But the Kansas-Nebraska Act (May 1854) gave residents the chance to create a slave state. The decision to allow the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to make their own decisions about slavery outraged the Free Soilers of the North, who saw it as the basis for the spread of slavery across the country, and war—”Bloody Kansas”—broke out across the territory .

Augustus Mitchell Jr., Clerk’s Office, United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania.” This map was engraved and dated 162 years ago Colored by hand. This is not a replica.
Description: Original hand-coloured engraving on heavier paper with fine ornamentation, fine detail, rich floral border; blank back; center folded at release.
CONDITION: Very good condition – 1″ bottom tear at center fold, stopping at decorative border; very light 2″ crease at outer left edge, small vertical wrinkle left of center of card (back only visible); outer Some slight processing marks/fingerprints/foxing around the edges and some very slight foxing in the map area; otherwise the map area is clear. Sometime in the past, the original binding tabs were replaced by binding tabs made of heavier materials. Overall, this is a very nice and rare early 1860’s Mitchell map of America.
