Michigan’s major interstate highways connect its major cities and facilitate travel between Michigan and its neighbors. I-69 arches around southeastern Michigan between the Ontario border and the Indiana border. I-75 crosses eastern Michigan from north to south, while I-94 crosses southern Michigan from east to west. I-96 connects the cities of Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids.
Michigan’s Auxiliary Interstate Highways serve metropolitan areas in the state. I-194 connects Battle Creek with I-94. I-196 connects I-96 in Grand Rapids with I-94 near Benton Harbor. I-275 connects I-75 to the western suburbs of Detroit. I-375 is a short feeder highway that provides easy access to downtown Detroit. I-475 provides convenient access to downtown Flint from I-75 and I-69. I-496 connects downtown Lansing with I-96. I-675 connects downtown Saginaw with I-75. I-696 serves the northern suburbs of Detroit.

With an area of 250,493 km2, the state of Michigan is located in the Great Lakes and Midwestern region of the United States.
Michigan is the only US state that is divided into two distinct large land regions (peninsulas) and bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. It also has the longest coastline, approximately 3,300 kilometers on the US mainland.
As shown on the map, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (“the U.P.”) is hilly and rugged in the west, especially in the heavily forested Porcupine Mountains. Further east in the Huron Mountains, northwest of Marquette, is Mount Arvon – the highest point in the state, at an elevation of 1,979 feet (603 m). To the east, the lands of the Upper Peninsula become much flatter, with some inland swamps.

The two peninsulas are separated by an 8 km long channel, known as the Strait of Mackinac, which in turn connects Lake Huron with Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. Mackinac Island is located on the eastern edge of the Straits of Mackinac. In the extreme northwest of Lake Superior lies wooded Isle Royale – the only national park (island) in the United States.
There are many islands in Michigan, including Bois Blanc, Drummond, Grand, Isle Royale, Mackinac, Sugar, the Manitou Islands and the Beaver Island Archipelago. Major rivers in the Upper Peninsula include the Ford, Escanaba, and Menominee rivers.
Michigan’s Lower Peninsula is glove-shaped and fairly flat, especially along the east and southeast coasts. Gentle, rolling hills are found in the central and southern parts, while further north, east and southeast of Traverse City the landscape becomes quite hilly. Located in the northwestern part of the city of Cadillac, the highest point of the lower peninsula, at 1,700 feet (520 m). Marked on the map by an inverted yellow triangle is Michigan’s lowest point, which is located along the Lake Erie shoreline at approximately 572 feet.
The surrounding Great Lakes are Michigan’s most striking landforms. In addition, the state is also covered by more than 11,000 (mostly small) freshwater lakes.
