The United Nations has divided Asia into five different sub-regions for statistical purposes. These sub-regions and the countries within them are described below:
The East Asian sub-region has a population of about 1.7 billion people and includes 5 countries, including the world’s most populous country, China. China’s population is estimated at over 1.4 billion. The most populous country in East Asia is Mongolia with a population of about 3.29 million. East Asian countries China and Japan are the second and third largest economies in the world respectively. China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2028. East Asia also includes North Korea, the world’s most isolated country. The rest of East Asia, particularly Japan and South Korea, view North Korea with trepidation and suspicion, especially given the fact that the communist country possesses multiple nuclear weapons. Tokyo is the most populous city in East Asia with a population of 38.2 million. The Chinese cities of Shanghai and Beijing are the second and third most populous cities in East Asia, respectively, with a population of over 20 million.
Southeast Asia is home to 11 countries. The population of the sub-region is estimated at 673 million. The largest and most populous country in Southeast Asia is Indonesia, which consists of an archipelago consisting of many large and small islands. Indonesia has a population of over 273.5 million. In addition to Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia, many countries in Southeast Asia are based on islands. The Kingdom of Brunei is the least populous country in Southeast Asia, with a population of no more than 437,000. The most populous city in the subregion is Manila, the capital of the Philippines, with a population of 13.3 million. Other major cities in Southeast Asia include the respective capitals of Indonesia and Thailand, Jakarta and Bangkok.
South Asia is the most populous country in the Asian sub-region, with a population of about 2 billion, comprising 9 countries. More than half of South Asia’s population lives in India, the region’s most populous country. India has a population of 1.38 billion, making it the second most populous country in the world. In fact, data suggests that India will overtake China by 2027.
