A three-dimensional solid form also has depth. Three-dimensional shapes, by their nature, have an interior and an exterior, separated by a surface. All physical elements, things you can touch, are three-dimensional.
This page covers both straight solids called polyhedra, which are based on polygons, and solids with curves, such as spheres, cylinders, and cones.
Polyhedra (or polyhedrons) are straight-sided solid shapes. Polyhedra are based on polygons, two-dimensional flat shapes with straight lines.
Activities For Describing 3d Shapes In Kindergarten
Polyhedra are also often defined by the number of edges, faces and vertices they have, as well as whether their faces are the same shape and size. Like polygons, polyhedra can be regular (based on regular polygons) or irregular (based on irregular polygons). Polyhedra can also be concave or convex.
One of the most basic and familiar polyhedra is the cube. A cube is a regular polyhedron, which has six square faces, 12 edges and eight vertices.
The five regular solids are a special class of polyhedra, whose faces are identical, and each face is a regular polygon. Platonic solids are:
A prism is any polyhedron that has two congruent ends and flat sides. If you cut a prism anywhere along its length, parallel to one end, its cross-section is the same: you end up with two prisms. The sides of a prism are parallelograms: four-sided shapes with two pairs of sides of equal length.
Properties Of Shape
Antiprisms are similar to regular prisms in that their ends match. However, the sides of antiprisms are made of triangles and not parallelograms. Antiprisms can get very complicated.
Although we tend to think of pyramids with a square base, like those built by the ancient Egyptians, they can in fact have any regular or irregular polygon base. Also, a pyramid can have an apex in the direct center of its base, a right pyramid, or it can have an off-center apex when it is an oblique pyramid.
The truncated cube (as illustrated) is an Archimedean solid with 14 faces. Six of the faces are regular octagons and the other eight are regular (equal) triangles. The shape has 36 edges and 24 vertices (vertices).
Solid shapes that include a curved or rounded edge are not polyhedra. Polyhedra can only have equal sides. See also our page on two-dimensional curved shapes.
What Is A Polyhedron
Many of the objects around you will include at least some curves. In geometry, the most common curved solids are cylinders, cones, spheres, and tori (the plural of torus).
A cylinder has the same cross section from one end to the other. Cylinders have two identical ends of a circle or an oval. Although similar, cylinders are not prisms since a prism has (by definition) parallelogram, flat sides.
A cone has a round or oval base and a top (or vertex). The side of the cone tapers gently to the top. A cone is similar to a pyramid but different in that a cone has only one curved side and a circular base.
Shaped like a ball or globe, a sphere is a completely round object. Every point on the surface of a sphere is the same distance from the center of the sphere.

Shaped like a ring, hoop, or donut, a regular ring torus is formed by rotating a smaller circle around a larger circle. There are also more complex forms of thorium.

Recognise And Describe 3d Shapes
The surface area of a cube is the area of one face (length x width) multiplied by 6, because all six faces are equal.
Since the face of a cube is a square, only one measurement needs to be taken: the length and width of a square are, by definition, the same.
. Multiply the number of faces of a cube by 6, and we find that the surface of the cube is 600 cm.
Similarly, the surface area of other regular polyhedra (platonic solids) can be calculated by finding the area of one side and multiplying the answer by the total number of sides; See the basic polyhedra diagram above.

To calculate the surface area of a standard pyramid with four equal triangular sides and a square base:
Then calculate the area of one side (triangle). Measure the width along the base and then the height of the triangle (also known as the slant length) from the center point of the base to the apex.
Finally, add the area of the base and the sides together to find the total surface area of the pyramid.
To calculate the surface area of other types of pyramids, add the area of the base (known as the base area) and the area of the sides (lateral area). You may need to measure the sides individually.

A geometric mesh is a two-dimensional “pattern” for a three-dimensional object. Meshes can be useful when working on the surface of a three-dimensional object. In the following diagram you can see how the basic pyramids are built, if the pyramid is ‘unfolded’ you are left with the net.
For a regular prism (where all sides are equal) calculate the area of one of the sides and multiply by the total number of sides.
To calculate the surface area of a cylinder, it is useful to think about the components of the shape. Imagine a can of corn: it has a top and a bottom, both circles. If you cut the side along its length and flatten it, you will have a rectangle. Therefore, you need to find the area of two circles and a rectangle.
The area of the side of the cylinder is the perimeter of the circle × the height of the cylinder.
